Hours later, long after the rest of the pack, Adela included, have gone home, I’m standing at the window of our bedroom when I hear the door open. My heart speeds up because I’m nowhere near ready for this conversation, and I regret not having accepted Adela’s invitation to stay the night with her. I don’t turn around because I know who it is.
