CHAPTER TWENTY

CHLOE His voice was audibly loud—so all the students in the classroom would clearly hear what he said—which immediately drew the stares of both the students and the teacher. And when I say the students, I mean Sarah and me included. But Edward was indifferent. He settled into his chair nonchalantly as he exchanged glances, his eyes lingering on mine. He gave me a shrug, as if asking me: What’s the bloody fuss? Would I be guilty if I admitted I preferred the quiet Edward? At least when he was quiet, he only spoke to me. He hadn't exchanged a single word in my father's gaff unless it was to me. "Is what he said true?" Sarah whispered to me, and my eyes shut involuntarily. I honestly didn't know how to answer that. Sarah might have an idea about Edward’s wealth, but I was pretty sure she only had a glimpse of his net worth because of his magnificent building. She didn't know who he truly was. "What did he just say?" "The building will be hers?" "Who the hell does he think he is?" "Just because he’s got the looks doesn't mean he has money flying around. Handsome people belong to the average class too. Not all handsome men are loaded." "If he really can afford the building, why on earth did he attend the school in the first place?" The students’ voices started to roar, and I was grateful for their doubt. If they had really believed him, it would be trouble. In fact, why would they believe him? They had no clue who he was! I opened my eyes and looked at Edward, who now wore a smirk. A smirk? Really? In this situation? What would he have done if they had believed him and started surrounding him and throwing themselves at him because of his wealth? The teacher ordered the class to be quiet, and that was it. The class fell silent, and most students were attentive. Each lesson started and ended with little or no attention from me. I was asleep during the lunch break. I don't know when or how I drifted off, but I was out cold. And before I knew it, it was the closing hour of the bloody school day. As Edgar had promised in the morning, he was already at the car by the time we got there. Sarah was with us, and her face showed she had a lot of questions to ask, but she was holding back. "Ed, do you believe that Sarah and Edgar aren't mates?" I asked rhetorically, and I could feel three sets of eyes on me. "Obviously. What makes you think so?" Edward asked me a question instead, one I wasn't expecting, as he walked towards the driver’s side. "I don't know. They seem close. Maybe because they are both werewolves, and they arrived at the school the same week, I suppose," I said, knowing the timeframe I gave was wrong, because I knew and remembered exactly when Edgar came to the school. I mean, I had a crush on him for a while. How could I forget when he returned to the school? "Two weeks’ interval," Sarah said, and I looked at her and smiled. "Can’t you tell your mate that you would be late? He should be able to understand," I pressed. "Would Edward understand if you were in my shoes? Especially when you tell him you're going to a guy's house to 'hang out'?" she asked, and the first answer I thought of put an end to my persuasion. "I thought as much," Sarah replied after my silence. Daisy. I wished Daisy was here. She would have followed me to his house without a second thought. But what could I do? Daisy is human, but Sarah is a werewolf. "See you guys at school tomorrow," she said, and instead of heading towards the main school gate, as I expected, she didn't. There was a black car behind Edward's. It wasn't there in the morning, so it must have driven in recently. Sarah walked towards the car, and a man in his early thirties who I hadn’t noticed earlier was leaning against the bonnet, looking at Sarah as she walked towards him. "That's her mate," Edgar said, and I noticed Edward’s eyes moving towards them. As soon as he saw the man, he opened the car door and got in. How did Edgar know that man was Sarah’s mate? A man leaning against a car she was walking toward didn't mean they were mates. Edward interrupted my thoughts as he hit the car horn. I hurriedly got into the car, but Edward did not drive. The car was blocking us. We wouldn't be able to move if they didn't. So, the car horn wasn't meant for me. It was for them. After a minute, the car was out of our way, but before Edward could start driving, the car door opened again, and Sarah entered with the man Edgar had called her mate. "Alpha." "Alpha." There were two mentions of ‘Alpha’ by two different people: Edgar and the man. Why would Edgar say ‘Alpha’? He has never called Edward ‘Alpha’; I wasn't sure he knew he was an Alpha, so why did he? Unless he was calling the man that. The man also said ‘Alpha’. To whom? If Edgar referred to the man as ‘Alpha’, could the man say the same thing to Edgar? Unless he was referring to Edward. "What the hell?" The stares on me made me know that I'd said that aloud, which I hadn't meant to. "Ohhh, she is definitely confused," I heard Sarah say. "Yes, I'm bloody confused! He referred to Edward as Alpha, and Edgar here is referring to him as Alpha, and your arms are linked with his. None of this makes sense," I exclaimed. "The man here is Sarah's mate. He is an Alpha of a pack, and I'm his Beta. You are right about Sarah and me; we do seem close. Alpha Dan called Edward ‘Alpha’ because Edward is also an Alpha. Alpha recognises Alpha. They’ve attended one or two meetings together," Edgar explained. "So, you knew Edward was an Alpha all this while?" I asked, surprised. "Yes. That makes it more fun. He didn't know me, but I do. He had no idea about who Sarah was either because of the different regions we dominated in," Edgar clarified. "Why not attend the school in your region? Why come here?" I asked. "Because we wanted to. There are different werewolves in different regions, which doesn't mean they belong to that region. Sarah had no idea who Edward was either," the only person who had chosen to explain everything to me said. "That pretty much explained everything. Can we go now?" Edward said this time. "Oh yes. I trust my mate is in good hands," Alpha Dan said. Sarah was hanging out with us. "I will do my best to protect her, your Alpha," Edgar said, and with that, Alpha Dan exited the car, and without wasting a second, Edward started the car and zoomed off.
