Vows

315 Words
When Emilia stepped into view, everything else disappeared. Lucas forgot the crowd, the music, the careful planning that had led to this moment. All he saw was her—walking toward him with a steadiness that hadn’t always been there, eyes bright, chin lifted, as if she were choosing this step by step. And she was. He remembered the years of waiting, the silences, the almosts that had nearly broken them. He remembered standing in this very place once before, terrified of wanting more. Now, he wanted everything. When Emilia reached him, she took his hands without hesitation. Her fingers were warm. Real. “I used to believe that love meant losing myself,” she said, voice clear despite the emotion trembling beneath it. “That choosing someone meant giving something up. But you taught me that staying can be an act of courage.” Lucas swallowed hard. “I choose you,” she continued. “Not because you keep me safe—but because you make me brave.” It was everything he had ever needed to hear. When it was his turn, Lucas didn’t look away. “I spent too long believing that love meant waiting quietly. That if I stayed still enough, I wouldn’t lose anyone.” His voice softened. “With you, I learned that love is choosing. Out loud. Every day.” He smiled then, just for her. “I choose you back.” The kiss was gentle at first—almost reverent—before deepening into something certain. Applause rose around them, but Emilia barely heard it. All she felt was Lucas’s hand steady in hers. That night, beneath strings of warm lights and open sky, they danced without fear. Laughter replaced doubt. Music replaced silence. And for the first time, the future didn’t feel like a question. It felt like a promise they had already begun to keep.
