9 Removing a clean tunic and trousers from his pack, Rhys checked the horses, then made his way to the rear of the inn where bathing rooms could be rented. Beyond getting clean and seeing to Kiera’s needs, he had no duties to complete. Feeling an itch he attributed to the restlessness of remaining in a place so close to Baltura and full of mercenaries rather than a push to travel, or to be home, he set it aside and focused on his surroundings. Sunrise shed light on everything. In addition to feeling unsettled, again came the sensation of being watched. Pausing under the eve built to keep rain and snow from the door, he peered over his shoulder. Nothing moved in the woods behind the inn, and he recognized it as odd. Listening, birds and squirrels were either elsewhere or absent altogether
