025: The Charity Gala

646 Words
The evening of the Sterling Charity Gala had finally arrived. Excitement filled Blackwood Mansion as the staff made the final preparations. Upstairs, Mrs. Harper stood behind Elena, carefully adjusting the last few strands of her hair. "There," she said with a satisfied smile. "Now you look absolutely stunning." Elena turned toward the full-length mirror. For a moment, she hardly recognized the woman staring back at her. The elegant gown Damian had chosen fit her perfectly. It was graceful, simple, and sophisticated. She took a deep breath, trying to calm the nervous flutter in her stomach. "Do I really look okay?" she asked softly. Mrs. Harper chuckled. "My dear, you're going to turn heads tonight." A few minutes later, Elena slowly walked downstairs. The sound of her heels echoed through the mansion. Everyone who happened to be in the living room stopped what they were doing. Even the house staff couldn't hide their admiration. Damian looked up. For a brief moment, he was speechless. His eyes remained fixed on Elena. Then a small smile appeared on his face. "You look beautiful." A faint blush spread across Elena's cheeks. "Thank you," she replied shyly. Without another word, Damian offered her his arm. Together, they left for the gala. The ballroom of the Grand Sterling Hotel shimmered beneath magnificent crystal chandeliers. Business leaders, celebrities, investors, philanthropists, and members of the press filled the luxurious venue. Camera flashes lit up the entrance as guests arrived one after another. When Damian Blackwood stepped inside with Elena by his side, the room seemed to pause. Conversations faded. Curious eyes followed them across the ballroom. Whispers quickly spread through the crowd. "Who's that woman with Mr. Blackwood?" "Isn't that Adrian Sterling's ex-wife?" "I heard they divorced only a few months ago." Elena felt dozens of eyes on her. Her confidence wavered. She instinctively lowered her gaze. Damian noticed immediately. Without looking at anyone else, he leaned closer and spoke in a calm voice. "Ignore them." "They'll always have something to say." His quiet reassurance helped ease her nerves. She took a slow breath and lifted her head once more. Across the ballroom, Adrian Sterling was engaged in conversation with several business associates. As he turned to greet another guest, his eyes landed on Elena. He froze. The conversation around him faded into the background. For the first time since the divorce... He saw her again. She wasn't the heartbroken woman who had walked out of his life. She looked confident. Elegant. Radiant. There was a quiet strength in her that he had never noticed before. His eyes followed her as she moved through the room. He couldn't look away. Regret settled heavily in his chest. Only now was he beginning to realize what he had lost. Standing nearby, Vanessa noticed Adrian's sudden silence. She followed his gaze. The moment she saw Elena standing beside Damian, jealousy tightened around her heart. She forced herself to smile, greeting the guests around her as though nothing was wrong. But inside... She was falling apart. She had convinced herself that Elena would eventually come crawling back to Adrian. Instead, Elena looked happier than she had ever imagined. She wasn't trying to win Adrian back. She was moving forward with her life. And somehow... That frightened Vanessa even more. A little later, overwhelmed by the crowd, Elena quietly excused herself and stepped onto the balcony for some fresh air. The cool evening breeze brushed against her face. She closed her eyes for a moment, enjoying the brief silence away from the noise inside. Then... A voice broke the stillness. "I've been looking for you for a very long time." Elena's eyes flew open. Her heart skipped a beat. Slowly... She turned around. The color drained from her face as she stared at the person standing in the shadows. "Y-you..." Before another word could be spoken... Everything went silent.
