Rays of light passed through the tall windows of Damian's mansion, illuminating the room where Elena sat on the edge of the bed, quietly holding a cup of tea. She had been living under Damian's roof for a few days now, but the massive house still felt completely strange to her.
The tension between them continued in every room.
Sometimes Damian was cold and distant. Other times, she caught him looking at her when he thought she wasn't paying attention.
It was confusing.
And exhausting.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
"Come in."
The door opened, revealing Mrs. Clara, the housekeeper.
"Mr. Damian asked me to tell you that breakfast is ready."
Elena nodded politely.
"Thank you."
A few minutes later, she went downstairs.
The dining room was unusually quiet.
Damian sat at the far end of the table, dressed in a black suit, reading through several documents.
He looked as intimidating as ever.
Elena took her seat without saying a word.
For several minutes, only the sounds of cutlery filled the room.
Then Damian suddenly spoke.
"How are you settling in?"
Elena nearly dropped her fork.
The question was unexpected.
"I'm fine."
"Fine?"
She looked up.
"Yes."
Damian studied her face.
"You don't look fine."
A strange silence followed.
Elena looked away.
"Not everything shows on a person's face."
His eyes darkened slightly.
"Maybe."
Before she could respond, Damian's phone rang.
His expression changed instantly after seeing the caller.
Without another word, he stood and walked out of the room.
Elena frowned.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Later that afternoon, Elena wandered into the mansion's library.
The room was enormous.
Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves surrounded her.
A large chandelier hung overhead.
It was easily her favorite room in the house.
She walked along the shelves, running her fingers across the books.
Then something caught her attention.
A photograph.
It was tucked between two books.
Out of curiosity, she pulled it out.
The moment she saw the picture, her heart stopped.
It was an old photograph.
And she was in it.
Younger.
Smiling.
Standing beside Damian.
Her hands trembled.
The picture had been taken over a year ago.
Before everything changed.
Before they became strangers.
Elena stared at it in disbelief.
Why would Damian keep this?
She was so focused on the photograph that she didn't hear footsteps approaching.
"Looking for something?"
His voice startled her.
She turned around quickly.
Damian stood at the entrance of the library.
His eyes immediately landed on the photograph in her hand.
The atmosphere changed instantly.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Elena raised the picture.
"You kept this?"
Damian's jaw tightened.
"It's just an old photograph."
"Just an old photograph?"
Her voice shook.
"If it's meaningless, why hide it inside a book?"
His silence was answer enough.
Elena's heart pounded.
For the first time since arriving, she saw something c***k in Damian's cold exterior.
Pain.
Regret.
Longing.
Something he had been hiding.
His gaze remained fixed on the photograph.
Then he finally spoke.
"You should put that back."
"No."
His eyes narrowed.
"No?"
Elena took a step forward.
"You keep acting like none of our past matters."
Another step.
"You keep pretending you don't care."
Damian's expression darkened.
"Elena."
"But you kept this."
She lifted the photograph.
"So tell me the truth."
The room grew silent.
Heavy.
Dangerously silent.
Damian looked away first.
And that was when Elena knew.
There was a truth he wasn't telling her.
A truth far bigger than she had imagined.
When his phone rang again, Damian answered immediately.
His expression hardened after a few seconds.
"I'll be there."
He ended the call.
Without explanation, he turned toward the door.
"Where are you going?" Elena asked.
Damian paused.
For a brief moment, he seemed torn.
Then he said quietly,
"Some problems don't concern you."
And with that, he walked away.
Leaving Elena standing alone in the library.
Holding the photograph.
And carrying more questions than answers.
