021: The Woman He Never Knew

731 Words
Adrian returned home just as the sun began to set. The moment he stepped inside, an overwhelming silence greeted him. The echoes of his footsteps filled the spacious house he had once shared with Elena. The place felt emptier than ever. For the first time, he realized a house could still be beautiful and yet feel completely lifeless. He loosened his tie and slowly walked through the living room. Every corner reminded him of her. An apron still hung neatly in the kitchen. Her favorite coffee mug remained on the counter, exactly where she had left it. A cookbook filled with handwritten notes and little reminders sat on the shelf. "Don't forget to reduce the heat after five minutes." "Adrian likes this soup with extra pepper." He stared at the familiar handwriting. His chest tightened. She had loved him in a thousand quiet ways. Ways he had never noticed. He had been so consumed by work, ambition, and Vanessa that he had overlooked the woman who had stood by him through everything. A wave of regret washed over him. He had lost someone who had loved him with all her heart. Taking a deep breath, Adrian walked toward the storage room. After a few moments of searching, he found a large box containing Elena's personal belongings. A thin layer of dust covered the lid. He carefully opened it. Inside were neatly arranged folders, books, and a few keepsakes. He picked up an old school certificate and gently brushed his thumb across the faded paper. Beneath it was a childhood drawing of a small family holding hands under a bright yellow sun. His eyes softened. He had never seen any of these before. As he continued searching, he found a worn envelope containing only a handful of documents about Elena's early life. He frowned. Something wasn't right. There were almost no childhood photographs. No birthday albums. No family portraits. Almost nothing. It was as if an entire part of Elena's life had simply disappeared. He slowly leaned back in his chair. "Why do I know so little about the woman I married?" he whispered. The question lingered in the quiet room. For years, he had shared a home with Elena. Yet he had never truly known her. Without wasting another second, Adrian picked up his phone and called his private investigator. The call connected almost immediately. "I have a new assignment for you," Adrian said. "I'm listening, sir." "I don't want you searching for Elena anymore." There was a brief silence. "Instead, I want you to find everything you can about her childhood." "It may take time," the investigator replied. Adrian tightened his grip on the phone. "Then take the time," he said firmly. "I want every record, every document, and every detail you can find." "I'll begin immediately, sir." The call ended. Adrian placed the phone on the table and closed his eyes. For the first time, he wasn't searching for Elena's location. He was searching for the truth about the woman he had failed to understand. Later that evening, Vanessa arrived at the house expecting to spend some time with Adrian. She had imagined a quiet dinner and a pleasant evening together. Instead, she found documents scattered across the dining table. Adrian barely acknowledged her presence. His attention remained fixed on the papers before him. "What are you doing?" she asked, forcing a smile. He let out a slow breath before answering. "I'm trying to understand someone I failed to appreciate." His voice was calm, but the regret behind it was impossible to miss. Vanessa's smile faded. She didn't need to ask who he was talking about. She already knew. Elena. Jealousy burned inside her, but she forced herself to remain composed. She quietly excused herself and left the house. As she walked toward her car, her confident expression disappeared. She lowered her head and whispered to herself, "If Adrian learns the truth about Elena..." "I'll lose him." Back inside the house, Adrian gathered the documents and gently closed the storage box. Just then, a folded letter slipped from between the old papers and landed softly on the floor. He froze. The envelope was old and slightly worn. His eyes fell on the name written across the front. Elena. He frowned. The handwriting was unfamiliar. He had never seen it before. Slowly... He bent down and reached for the letter.
