Chapter 23 George Gemma ran to her mother as soon as George lowered her from the wagon. She flung her arms around Bitty, burying her head in her skirt. I stayed hidden deep within the shade of a walnut tree. This was their time together, and I did not wish to be disruptive. I returned to my book, my heart filled with joy. After depositing my novel in the sitting room, I made my way to the kitchen. It was early, leaving me plenty of time to complete my task. Deep-red strawberry slices were sweetened with sugar, the shortcakes were ready on the tray. Fresh cream thickened in the bowl as my aching arm whisked the mixture. This was the best part of the dessert. With everything covered, I followed the worn path to the quarters. Laughter guided me to an outdoor gathering area. Iris greeted
