Although my heart still yearned for Thomas’s company, I had grown accustomed to his absence.
Our packed trunks, lined like soldiers, waited in the parlor. On Monday, we were scheduled to depart with Mr. Larkin and his sister, Miss Caroline, as our chaperones.
I adored Miss Caroline. She arrived a month ago and had spent a great deal of time acquainting herself with me and Ruby. Her laughter flowed without restriction and she made me feel contented.
Papa stared at my overflowing trunk. “Do you not plan to return?”
