Chapter 5
Time With Rebecca
I silently urged the horses to move faster for I was beyond ready to be at the Smith plantation. Sitting still was impossible.
Rebecca invited me to stay with her this night and Saturday night as well. This was my first time away from home by myself and my mind raced, imagining all of the fun things we would do. Also, I was relieved to be away from Jimmy for a while, he was more ornery than ever, going out of his way to say something unpleasant to me when Papa wasn’t listening.
Two servants, dressed in fancy uniforms replete in buttons and bows, emerged from the house. After Papa helped me down, (I remembered my manners and didn’t jump down), the man with beads of sweat shining on his brow led the horses and wagon to the shade.
