Chapter 18 Mike fumbled for words. He looked over my shoulder and opened and closed his mouth like a fish out of water. He pulled me in tight and held me. But he didn’t answer. I didn’t know what to think. Was he trying to figure out how to break up with me? Was he worried I was starting to feel too much? Was he coming up with a reason he couldn’t stay but that we could keep sleeping together? I didn’t wait for the words that would shatter my heart. I didn’t need to hear them to know how he felt. It was clear in what he didn’t say. So I let him off the hook. “Never mind. I shouldn’t have asked. Thanks for dinner. And cleaning up the place.” “I want to stay,” he blurted out. “I do. We’ve just never done it before.” I shrugged, unsure how to respond. “I know. But you don’t have to.”
