TERMS OF SURRENDER

## **Chapter 2: Terms of Surrender** The clicking of Seraphina’s heels against the Italian marble floor sounded like the steady ticking of a countdown. She walked away from the massive wall of windows, turning her back on the sprawling New York skyline. It was beautiful, but it was a reminder of everything she was currently locked away from. Across the room, Dante Vance sat behind his monolithic mahogany desk, calmly signing a stack of legal documents as if he hadn’t just upended her entire life sixty minutes ago. "You can stop pretending I’m not here, Dante," Seraphina said, her voice cutting through the quiet hum of the penthouse’s climate control. Dante didn’t look up immediately. He finished his signature with a sharp, elegant flourish, capped his fountain pen, and finally set it down. When his dark eyes met hers, there was no malice in them—only the cold, absolute certainty of a man who owned everything he looked at. "I never forget you're here, Seraphina," he said smoothly. He leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers. "But if we are going to coexist under this roof, we need to establish the ground rules. Your father signed the contract. Now, you sign yours." "I am not signing anything." "You don't have to put pen to paper for a contract to be binding in my world," Dante replied, a faint, dangerous smile playing on his lips. "Your compliance is the signature." He stood up, walking around the desk with that slow, predatory grace she was beginning to recognize. He stopped a few feet away from her, hands resting casually in his trouser pockets. The sheer physical presence of him was suffocating, but Seraphina forced herself to maintain eye contact, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing her shrink. "Rule number one," Dante began, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly baritone. "You do not leave this penthouse without my express permission and a security detail. The Moretti family is looking for a vulnerability. If you step outside these doors unprotected, you aren't just risking your life—you are risking my asset." "'Asset,'" she mocked, her jaw tightening. "Is that all I am to you? A line item on a balance sheet?" "Right now? Yes," Dante said without a hint of hesitation, his candor striking her like a physical blow. "You are the living collateral for a multi-million-dollar shipping debt. If you are broken or stolen, the debt goes unpaid. I don't lose investments, Seraphina." She swallowed the bitterness rising in her throat. "And rule number two?" "You will attend every public event, every gala, and every dinner I deem necessary. When we are in public, you are not a hostage. You are my partner. You will smile, you will wear the jewels I give you, and you will make the world believe that choosing me was the easiest decision you've ever made." "You want me to lie for you." "I want you to survive for us," Dante corrected sharply. He stepped closer, the scent of expensive cologne and rich tobacco enveloping her. "The underworld is built on perception. If the other families think you are a weak link, they will target you to get to me. If they see a united front, they stay away. Your compliance keeps you safe." Seraphina stared at the crisp white collar of his shirt, noticing the faint edge of a dark tattoo creeping up his neck. "And what happens behind closed doors, Dante? When the public isn't watching?" Dante reached out, his fingers surprisingly gentle as they caught her chin, tilting her face up so she had no choice but to look into his eyes. "Behind these doors, you are free to hate me as much as you like. You can scream, you can curse my name, and you can dream of my downfall. But you will respect my boundaries. My private quarters are off-limits. My study is off-limits. And you will never, *ever* lie to me." "Trust is a two-way street, Don Vance," she whispered, her breath hitching slightly as his thumb brushed against her lower lip. "I don't need your trust, *mia regina*," Dante murmured, his eyes darkening as they tracked the movement of his thumb before snapping back to her gaze. "I only need your surrender." He let go of her chin, the sudden lack of contact leaving a strange, cold ache behind. He turned back toward his desk, picking up a sleek black smartphone and tossing it onto the leather sofa near her. "That phone is encrypted. It has three numbers programmed into it: my personal line, my head of security, and the penthouse kitchen. Use it wisely. Your family is officially blocked from contacting you." The mention of her family made her chest tighten. "Did you block them, or did they just stop trying?" Dante paused, his back to her. For a second, a flicker of something resembling pity crossed his handsome features, but it was gone before she could truly catch it. "Your father has already redirected his focus to his southern routes, Seraphina," Dante said quietly, his voice devoid of emotion. "He hasn't called. Don't look back. Your life there is over." The words felt entirely final, sealing her fate inside the luxurious prison. Her own blood had traded her away, leaving her stranded in the territory of a monster. Dante walked toward the heavy oak doors of the study, pausing as he gripped the handle. "Get some rest. Tomorrow, my tailor arrives to fit you for the season. If you're going to play the part of my queen, you need to look the part." With that, the doors opened and closed, leaving Seraphina entirely alone in the silence of the penthouse. She looked at the encrypted phone on the couch, then back at the glittering city below. The cage was beautiful, and the terms of her surrender had been set—but as she clutched the ruby necklace still resting against her collarbone, Seraphina knew she wasn't ready to give up the fight just yet.
