Andrew raised his hands and clapped for her. “Some good news that is, ey?” Lianne joined in the applause. The cheating couple looked at themselves and giggled together; like something was extremely funny. Like finally, a boulder had been rolled off their way to happiness. The effect, though stinging more than ever; Evie stood her ground and watched them clap their hands at her declaration. “Evie sweetheart, this is truly good news. You’ve never been such a good wife like right now, too bad it’s late.” He said as he went round his large mahogany desk, and bent to pull out some documents from the drawers behind it. Then stood up with the papers in his hand. He held it like it was a flag of victory. This was the only time after she gave him her savings and access to people and materials that mattered; that helped his company grow, he was surrendering to her will. “I already prepared one three months ago, and was wondering when would be the best time to bring it up. But like the saying goes; there’s no better time than the present.” He smiled to himself. She made it all the easier for him. He walked to where she stood and slammed the papers on the glass coffee table before her. He threw a pen at her as well. “Make it quick.” He said in a low voice, before he turned to his secretary, snaked a hand around her waist and together they waltzed in the presence of his wife. “Baby, I can’t believe this is happening so quick and easy. This would be a huge step for us. When can I pack in?” “This evening if you want, sugar.” Lianne squealed with joy, having accomplished her goal. With one more step, she would have everything she ever wanted. The only problem now was making sure she was pregnant with a boy. That wouldn’t be so hard, considering the situation that had turned in her favor. Evie watched them with red-rimmed eyes. Anger, wrath, and revenge sang in her ears. Pain, unimaginable pain, and an overbearing weight of defeat made her entire body shake. His only daughter, whom he considered rotten fruit, had always wanted to dance with him this way and play with her father, but he always dismissed her, leaving Evie to manage the situation between father and daughter. And here he was, freely giving that privilege to his secretary. She picked the pen from the floor in anger and signed the first page. Then she skimmed through the contents. Her eyes landed on the term where he stated that he would grant both mother and child an alimony of a million dollars. A bitter laugh escaped her lips, breaking the symphony of the soon-to-be couple. “After all I’ve done for you… One million? That’s how much our seven years is worth to you?” “You should be grateful I spared you something considerate, Evie. Say, thank you.” She huffed in unbelief, pulled off her wedding ring, and snapped the fake diamond necklace he bought for her birthday last year. She threw them on the floor and stared at them. “You can rot in hell with your cursed money, Andrew Mendes! I don’t need it.” She muttered to herself as she charged out of the office. “You will rot in hell, you and your sins. You will rot in hell, I promise.” Andrew’s brows creased a little as he watched her leave. Her backside etching into his thoughts forever. He hadn’t noticed the slit at the back of her dress, exposing her very excellent legs. Lianne tilted his head with her hand to look at her. Lianne was nothing compared to his wife. The only things she had were the two mighty watermelons on her chest and her mesmerizing cat eyes. Where Evie was dark, Lianne was light. Maybe that was the sign he needed, that this was the best decision he had made in his life. Running out of the garage in tears, Evie hailed down the taxi she saw and flew into it. She gave him the address and told him to drive. Then she sat back, folding her lips together to stop the howling that threatened. Life was happening to her the second time, she thought. She was going to the home where her cheating ex-husband would now live with his concubine. She shook her head, allowing the tears to stream down. Seven years! Seven years of trying, seven years of loving and committing to love, was gone. Just like that. And the only blessing she had from those seven years was her Vivian. He was still a 9 to 5 worker in a company that paid him next to nothing when they met. They dated for a year before they got married and had his daughter two years later. His company let him go when they downsized; he came back home weeping in her arms. Evie gave him every penny she saved since she was 15, to start his business, and she helped him overcome many obstacles in his business. If not for accidentally saving an old man’s life, he wouldn’t even be where he was now. And he shoved that in my face, she thought. He did it without mercy in his eyes. She alighted from the car and told the taxi driver to wait for her. “I will pay everything.” When he agreed, she dashed into their three-story building perched on the top of a hill> she made her way to her room, ordering her staff to pack all her daughter’s belongings, leaving nothing behind. She proceeded into her closet and shook her shoe shelves in fury. Then she went to her wardrobe section and screamed till she was aware of the metallic taste of blood at the back of her throat. She packed all her stuff in her suitcases, then poured sulfuric acid on all his belongings, even the bed. Just when she finished packing, she realised, to her horror, that she had nowhere to go. She fell to her knees and shook as she wept. Where would I go now? Who will help me? Oh God!
