...
Damian led her down the hallway and into a large study, its walls lined with bookshelves filled with old, leather-bound volumes. A fire crackled in the hearth, casting flickering shadows across the room, and a large, ornate desk stood at the center, its surface cluttered with papers and ledgers. Damian gestured for her to take a seat in one of the leather armchairs by the fire, while he moved to stand by the desk, his back to her as he rifled through the papers.
Evelyn sat down, her mind racing as she tried to piece together her next move. She needed to keep Damian on her side, to make him believe that she was willing to cooperate, even if it meant feeding him false information. The journal she had found in her father’s safe room was her only leverage, and she needed to use it wisely.
After a moment, Damian turned to face her, holding a single piece of paper in his hand. He studied it for a long moment before meeting her gaze, his expression inscrutable.
“Your father was a cautious man,” he said, his voice calm, almost conversational. “He kept meticulous records of his dealings, but he also knew how to cover his tracks. This ledger,” he held up the paper, “contains details of a series of offshore accounts—accounts that I’m very interested in. But, unfortunately for me, it’s incomplete.”
Evelyn’s heart skipped a beat as she realized what he was holding—part of the puzzle that her father had left behind. She knew that the full details were in the journal she had found, but she couldn’t reveal that to Damian, not yet. She needed to keep him interested, to make him believe that he needed her to find what he was looking for.
“I don’t know where the rest of the information is,” she lied, forcing herself to meet his gaze without flinching. “But I might be able to help you find it.”
Damian raised an eyebrow, a faint smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. “Might be able to?”
“I don’t know all the details,” Evelyn continued, choosing her words carefully. “But I do know that my father kept certain things hidden, even from me. If you give me time, I can try to piece it together, but I need access to his files, his records.”
Damian studied her for a long moment, his eyes searching hers for any sign of deception. Evelyn held her breath, willing herself to remain calm, to appear confident. Finally, he nodded, though the suspicion in his eyes remained.
“You have one week,” he said, his voice cold and firm. “One week to find what I’m looking for. If you don’t, or if I suspect you’re playing games with me, I won’t hesitate to make you regret it.”
Evelyn swallowed hard, nodding in agreement. “Understood.”
Damian’s smirk widened as he crossed the room to stand in front of her, his presence overwhelming. “Good. I’m glad we understand each other.”
Without another word, he turned and left the study, leaving Evelyn alone with her thoughts and the flickering firelight. As the door closed behind him, she let out a shaky breath, her mind racing. She had bought herself some time, but she knew it wouldn’t be enough. Damian was dangerous, and he wouldn’t hesitate to turn on her the moment he felt she was no longer useful.
But for now, she needed to focus on finding a way out of this mess. She needed to find allies, to gather information, and to stay one step ahead of Damian and Lucas. The journal in her backpack was her only lifeline, and she needed to figure out how to use it to her advantage before it was too late.
Evelyn stood up and began to pace the study, her thoughts churning. She knew she couldn’t do this alone, but who could she trust? Lucas had betrayed her, Damian was using her, and she had no idea where to turn. But as she paced, her eyes fell on the rows of books lining the walls, and an idea began to take shape in her mind.
Her father had always been a step ahead of everyone else, and he had taught her to be the same. If she could find the right information, the right leverage, she might be able to turn this situation around. But it would take more than just luck—it would take cunning, patience, and a willingness to risk everything.
Evelyn stopped in front of the bookshelf, her fingers tracing the spines of the old books. Somewhere in this house, there had to be something—some clue, some hint of what her father had left behind. She just needed to find it before Damian lost his patience.
As the fire crackled behind her, Evelyn steeled herself for the battle ahead. The night was far from over, and the road ahead was fraught with danger. But she had no choice but to face it head-on. The stakes were too high, and the price of failure was too great.
She needed to survive, to find the truth, and to reclaim what was rightfully hers. And she would do whatever it took to make that happen.
Without hesitation, Evelyn began to search the room, determined to find the answers she needed before it was too late.
