Nobody spoke.
The silence inside the underground chamber felt heavier than the concrete above us.
I looked from Grim to Mara.
Then back to the phone still clutched in Grim's hand.
"The call..." I whispered. "It came through the tunnel?"
Mara nodded slowly.
"That line was installed over twenty years ago."
Her voice sounded distant.
"It was never connected to the public network."
Grim stared at the screen.
"Then how did he reach it?"
"I don't know."
It was the first time I'd heard uncertainty in Mara's voice.
That frightened me more than the call itself.
She always seemed to know what came next.
Now...
She looked just as lost as the rest of us.
Cal walked to the old electrical panel mounted on the wall.
He brushed away decades of dust and opened the rusted metal door.
