Luna's pov.
The night was dark but the fear in my heart made everything feel darker. My hands shook as I held the children behind me, pushing them gently towards the wall.
“Stay behind me, don't rush,” I whispered, trying to sound brave.
The air became heavy with full anger and tension. I could hear the growling becoming low and deep. It was threatening.
I knew that sound. I have heard it several times but never understand. It was entirely different tonight; the growling didn't just belong to one Alpha. It belongs to two.
Ryder stepped forward from the shadow, his eyes growling black gold, his tall frame tense, having tight muscles as he glanced at the figure in front of him.
“What's he doing here? You have no right to claim them” Ryder growls, his voice shaking the leaves in the trees.
Another figure stepped into the moonlight. My breath caught in my throat.
Ethan.
His eyes were bright but filled with different kinds of fire. It was rage. Pain and progressive.
“They are mine as they are yours, so leave them,” Ethan snapped back, his voice cold.
My heart dropped.
No. No. He didn't just say that. Probably something must have happened.
Or did he?
“Aurora warned me…..” I mumbled my voice barely a whisper. “I was warned never to go out or come close to him—Rryder”.
“Don't speak like you know her —Ethan, you're nothing but a coward” Ryder said.
“I'm never a coward, and I didn't intend to be one; you took her away from me! You lied to her!”
I couldn't take it anymore. “Stop it!” I shouted. “You both should just stop the nuisance display of yours. This isn't about your past or anger, it's about the children”.
They didn't listen.
Ethan lunged at Ryder with a terrifying roar which made the two Alphas collide in a fight, bursting their skin as they shifted mid-air, landing hard on the ground in their massive wolf forms. Teeth bared claws out.
I gasped and pulled the children back.
“No, no, no,’’ I whispered. “Please stop”.
A loud snap of bone echoed through the air as blood stained the dirt.
I couldn't look or even breathe. Just wondering what's going on with the both of them.
Suddenly one of the kids screamed. “Daddy please stop! You're hurting him!”
My eyes widened.
Which one did he mean?
I quickly turned to the child but the answer never came.
The fight grew louder. One wolf was pinned and the other had blood dripping from his mouth.
I screamed. “Someone please help me!”
But no one came everywhere, silence with no answers.
Without hesitation the child who screamed broke free from my arms.
“No!” I yelled chasing after him. “Don't go near them”.
But it was too late.
He ran straight between the fighting wolves.
“Daddy?” He whispered. “Please don't die. You can't leave me here all alone”.
The wolf on top slowly growled and stepped back.
They shifted back to men; they were panting, breathing, and shaking.
“Don't worry kid, I'll never hurt him,” Ethan softly said, tears dropping in his eyes.
Ryder stumbled forward holding his side. “Free him and let him go”. He said, his voice deep with anger. “The child is mine. I raised him, I was there when Luna gave birth”.
“You tricked her and made her believe I was gone. Ryder. You're nothing but a thief!”. Ethan spat.
My legs gave out and I dropped to my knees. My whole world was spinning, my head aching.
“Luna,” Ethan said, crawling towards me. “Just tell me the truth. Who did you love first?”.
I opened my mouth in shock with no words.
Ryder growled don't do this. She has been through enough.
“I need to know!” Ethan shouted. “I don't want it to look as if I'm wasting my time”.
Tears fell on my cheeks.
“I've no answer to that. I need privacy. I want to be left alone!” I screamed.
Silence.
“You can't be left alone,” Ryder said.
“But I did. I was all alone before you both came. I was left with a curse but you all went your different ways…though Aurora warned me….”.
“What curse? And who's Aurora?” Ethan asked, stepping forward.
“The blood curse”, I whispered. “The curse was meant to destroy the next Alpha born of two bloodlines. Aurora tried to protect me but I didn't listen”.
The boys. My sons.
Could the curse still be active?
Ryder fell back, his face pale. “You mean one of the boys would be destroyed by the curse?”
“Yes,” I said, nodding slowly. “And one of them will not survive if the curse finds them”.
“No way, that won't happen,” Ethan said, grabbing my hands. “We must fight to stop such things from happening”.
“But how?” I asked. “We don't even know who the curse may choose and why?”.
Suddenly, the oldest child spoke. “I have dreams… of fire. Of wolves with red eyes.”
My heart stopped.
Ryder stood. “That’s the mark. The one chosen by the curse.”
“But chosen for what?” I asked, trembling. “To die? Or to rule?”
A wind blew through the trees. The moonlight shifted.
And then… a howl.
Not a normal howl. A haunting, chilling sound that echoed deep in our bones.
Ethan turned to me. “He’s coming.”
“Who?” I asked.
Ryder’s voice was almost a whisper. “The one who started it all.”
The ground shook beneath us.
The children huddled close.
“What do we do?” I asked, my voice cracking.
“We run,” Ethan said.
“No,” Ryder replied. “We fight.”
Another howl.
Louder.
Closer.
I stood, gathering the children. My heart beat faster than ever.
“Luna,” Ethan said, grabbing my hand. “If something happens… I love you. I always have.”
Ryder stepped forward. “And I’ll protect you. Even if it means dying.”
Tears filled my eyes again.
“I never wanted this,” I whispered.
“I know,” they said in unison.
A shadow moved in the distance.
The red-eyed wolf appeared, massive and terrifying. His mouth opened in a snarl, revealing sharp teeth.
The children screamed.
“Go!” I shouted. “Run!”
But the red-eyed wolf didn’t move.
He stared at the boys.
Then he said one word—
“Son.”
I froze.
Was he talking to my children?
