Ryder's pov.
My pack members murmur behind my back everywhere I go. Their voices were low but I heard them.
“Why did he reject Luna? What happened that night? She even left in tears. Why?”
They think I didn't notice their discussion but I do.
I sit in my office gripping the edge of my desk, trying to drown out their words.
I made sure the past was buried. But something happened lately that feels different. My wolf, which is usually silent and obedient, became restless and aggressive inside of me.
What is it? I ask him.
He doesn't answer. Instead, a deep growl rumbles through my chest. Frustration mixed with unease. I've spent years believing she's gone. Possibly dead but there's no reason for feeling this way.
The door pulled me from my thoughts when a heavy knock landed on it.
“Who’s that?” I angrily asked.
“Is me Selena,” the cool soft voice replied.
“Then come in,” I say, my voice sharper than I intended.
Selena Blackwood, my beta swung the door open and stepped inside with a serious expression.
“Something is wrong, and we need to talk”. She says.
I sigh, rubbing my temples. “If this is about the rogues near the border. I’ve already—”.
“It's not about the rogues. It's something different,” Selena interrupted, her eyes met mine, feeling something I can't even explain.
My body stiffens.
“There's nothing to talk about,” I said coldly.
“She's not dead is she?” Selena presses, stepping forward. “Nobody or no one has proof about her death; they're all assuming you need to confirm that first before making any decisions.”
My hand curls into a fist. “She's gone Selena, and gone for good. End of discussion”.
She exhales heavily. “Then why is your wolf acting like this? He's on edge. So is mine”.
I push back my chair, standing abruptly. “Please just go, and that's enough; I don't want to discuss this with you.”
Selena studied me for a moment before nodding. “Fine–but you should know that people are saying they have seen her; probably she reincarnated, or she's still alive.”
My heart nearly stops.
I glare at her. “That's not possible. They had mistaken her for someone else”.
“Is it?” She challenges me. “Because I saw her in the woods last night, Ryder”.
Without hesitation I forcefully pressed her against the wall, gripping my hands on her neck. “Don't lie to me. Are you sure of what you're saying?”.
Her pulse remained steady. “I won't even dare to lie to you”.
My wolf surges forward, growling in frustration. He wants out. He wants to find her.
I take a step back breathing heavily and letting go of Selena.
I muttered, shaking my head. “I can't believe this or maybe you could be making a mistake”
I wanted to believe her at first but no matter what. I still have some doubts deep inside of me.
The wind became cold against my skin as the night drew near, but I barely felt it. Selena’s words repeated in my head, so I stood on the balcony staring at the moon.
Then, I heard it.
A whisper in the wind.
A name.
Luna.
My heart pounds. My wolf howls inside me.
It’s impossible.
She’s gone.
Right?
If Luna was truly dead… why do I feel her presence so strongly tonight?
The wind howls through the trees carrying her name like a ghostly whisper. Luna.
My breath rises and falls with heavy breath as I step back from the balcony. My wolf paces inside me, his energy wild and uncontrollable.
I try to convince myself it is just my mind playing tricks on me. But the feelings won't go away. It was too real and too strong.
Selena walked in through the door, her face tense. “She's still alive; you felt it, right?”.
I kept mute without an answer.
Her eyes narrowed. “Ryder, something is happening, and we can't ignore this”.
I rub the back of my neck, trying to think clearly. “You need to explain something to me?”.
“What's it?” She curiously asked.
“What exactly did you see in the woods last night?”.
Selena hesitated, then said. “It was dark. I didn't get close, but I saw a familiar figure; I saw her Ryder. The Same hair, the same eyes, she stood there watching me”.
I grip the edge of my desk, my knuckles turning white. “Are you sure it was her?”.
“I wouldn't mistake Luna for someone else; I believe it was her,” she firmly says.
A heavy silence fills the room.
Then Selena uncomfortably shifts. “There's more to that”.
I look up. “What?”.
“There's a scent near the border. It's faint but familiar”.
My stomach tightens. “That should be Luna's scent, isn't it?”.
She nods.
I curse under my breath. This doesn't make any sense. She had disappeared years ago. And if she's supposed to be alive, why would she still be around my territory?
I grab my jacket. “We're checking the border now”.
Selena follows without question.
The forest seems to be silent when we reach the edge of my land. The air became thick with tension.
I deeply inhale searching for any trace of her. At first, it was nothing. Then—
A faint scent lingered.
It was a familiar scent but unmistakable.
Luna.
My wolf grows lowly, his frustration mirroring mine.
“I told you,” Selena mutters. “She's close”.
I scan the trees, every shadow seeming to move. My pulse quickened. “Why is she hiding if she is here, why didn't she show herself?”.
Selena doesn't answer.
A sudden rustling in the bushes makes the both of us tense.
I take a step forward. “Who's there?”.
Still no response.
Another rustle came again, but this time, it was very close.
My wolf snarls; I slightly shift, preparing to attack.
Then a voice drifts through the darkness. It was a whisper.
“You shouldn't have come here, Ryder”.
The hair on my arms stands.
“Luna?” I call out, yet there is no answer.
The wind picks up carrying the scent away.
She's gone.
Again.
I was frustrated clenching my jaw as the pain kept burning through me. “She was here,” I growl. “I know it.”
Selena looks around, her expression troubled. “Why won’t she let us see her, if she's alive?”
I don’t answer. Because I don’t know.
But one thing is clear—Luna is out there.
And she doesn’t want to be found.
Why is Luna hiding from me… and what is she afraid of?
