Chapter 4: Fire and Ice

890 Words
Sienna knew she was walking into a trap the moment she arrived at the site the next morning. After last night’s unexpected truce-turned-dinner, she had spent the entire night convincing herself it meant nothing. It was just a meal. Just a bet. Just another game Adrian Sterling had roped her into. And yet, the moment she stepped onto the construction site, she could feel the shift in the air. Adrian was already there, standing near the foundation layout with the project manager. He had his sleeves rolled up, the morning sun casting shadows along the sharp angles of his face. He looked relaxed, like the previous night hadn’t left any sort of impression on him. Good. That made two of them. She marched toward the group, her heels clicking against the gravel. "Morning. Any updates from the suppliers?" Adrian turned, smirking. "Nice to see you, too, Reed." She ignored the comment and faced the project manager, who handed her a clipboard. "We got the revised delivery schedules. There’s a slight delay on the steel beams—" "Unacceptable," Sienna cut in. "We need those by next week. Did you speak to the supplier?" Adrian folded his arms. "Relax, I already called them this morning. They’ll expedite it." She glanced up. "And you didn’t think to inform me?" "Didn’t know I had to report my every move to you." Sienna exhaled sharply. "We’re partners on this project, Adrian. Communication is key." He tilted his head. "So, last night didn’t count as communication?" Her grip tightened on the clipboard. "That was a bet, not a discussion." He chuckled, clearly enjoying himself. "Well, I enjoyed our little bet. We should make more of them." "Not happening." "We’ll see." Before she could snap back, one of the engineers approached them. "We’ve got an issue. The site inspector moved up his evaluation—he’ll be here in an hour." Sienna and Adrian exchanged a glance. An inspection this early was unusual, and if they weren’t fully prepared, it could delay the entire project. Sienna squared her shoulders. "We need to double-check all safety measures. Adrian, you handle structural compliance. I’ll go over the permits and paperwork." For once, he didn’t argue. "Got it. Let’s move." The next hour was chaos. Sienna reviewed documents at a breakneck pace, ensuring every permit was in order. Meanwhile, Adrian oversaw the crew, making last-minute adjustments. By the time the inspector arrived, they were ready. The man walked the site with an air of authority, jotting notes onto his tablet. Sienna followed closely, answering his questions with precision. Adrian remained a step behind, letting her take the lead. When the inspector finally turned to them, he nodded. "Everything looks in order. No major concerns. You’ll receive the official report by the end of the week." Sienna released a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. "Thank you." As soon as the inspector left, Adrian clapped a hand on her shoulder. "Nice work, Reed." She stepped away, shooting him a glare. "Don’t touch me." He smirked. "You liked it." "You’re impossible." "And yet, here we are." She turned on her heel, but before she could walk away, Adrian’s voice stopped her. "Dinner again tonight?" She froze. Then turned, narrowing her eyes. "We’re not doing this, Sterling." He grinned. "Oh, we definitely are." And the worst part? A tiny, infuriating part of her wasn’t sure she wanted to say no. That evening, Sienna found herself staring at her reflection in the restaurant’s mirror. She had told herself she wouldn’t go. She had told herself she wouldn’t let Adrian bait her into another evening of verbal sparring and tension that felt like it could snap at any moment. And yet, here she was, standing outside the high-end restaurant where he had made a reservation. Damn it. She took a deep breath and walked in. The hostess led her to a private booth in the back, where Adrian was already waiting. He stood when she arrived, giving her a once-over. "You came." "Don’t read too much into it," she said as she slid into the booth. "I was hungry." "Whatever helps you sleep at night." They ordered, and for a few minutes, silence stretched between them. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it was charged. The kind of silence that carried too much weight. "So, tell me, Reed," Adrian finally said, swirling his wine. "Why do you hate me so much?" She scoffed. "Where do I start?" "Start with the real reason." Sienna hesitated. "You’re arrogant, controlling, and have a God complex." Adrian laughed. "And here I thought we were bonding." She sighed. "You’re a good businessman, Adrian. I won’t deny that. But you don’t respect boundaries. You bulldoze your way through deals like people are just obstacles." His smirk faded slightly. "And yet, here you are, working with me." "Because I don’t have a choice." He leaned in, eyes locking onto hers. "Are you sure about that?" Her pulse jumped. The way he looked at her—like he could see straight through her defenses—was unnerving. She sat back, breaking the moment. "Eat your steak, Sterling." He smirked. "Whatever you say, Reed." The night went on, and despite herself, she found it harder to deny the growing tension between them. Because for all his arrogance, Adrian Sterling was becoming dangerously hard to resist.
