Chapter Four When you're trying to stay under the radar, it pays to be good with your hands. You want the kind of skills that people need, but only occasionally. The kind they'll pay cash for, just to avoid doing paperwork or paying payroll taxes. I've picked up a lot of these skills along the way. Carpentry, plumbing, welding. I have worked as a truck mechanic, a forklift driver, and a backhoe operator. My current gig was equally glamorous, repairing freight elevators for a small outfit that landed a big contract and needed to hire in some temporary help to fulfill it.
