Greyson’s POV
That bright pink crop top and the view of Aubrey’s ass as she worked out on the stair master must have temporarily short circuited my brain, I suppose. I had nearly forgotten all about asking if she’d be interested in being my plus one at my father’s wedding. And I had talked to my father again a few nights later. He had asked for my date’s name for the guest list. I told him Aubrey’s name, and prayed that I could get her to agree.
So Thursday morning I decided that I finally needed to bring it up the idea of her being my date for the wedding. Only she doesn’t show up for her usual workout that morning. Nor do I see her on Friday morning, either! I even check the surveillance cameras in the fitness room that evening to check if she has switched to evening workouts. But she isn’t there.
What’s going on? I hope that she isn’t sick!
Maybe she’s just avoiding me? I have no idea why she would, though.
Late at night on Friday I get an after hours call, and after seeing that it’s from apartment 1202 I debate for a second whether to let it go to voice message. At the last moment I decide to pick up and find out what the problem is.
“This is Greyson,” I say, picking up the phone and trying to sound indifferent, even though I’m secretly pleased to hear from her. “What seems to be the issue?”
“Hey, Jude,” she starts off, making me cringe inwardly. I’ve always rather hated those two words used together. “This is Aubrey Downing in apartment 1202. The battery on my smoke detector is chirping every few minutes and it’s starting to drive me insane! Have you got any batteries available? I don’t have the right type of battery on hand. I’d really appreciate if you came right away so I can sleep tonight.”
“No worries, I’ll be right there,” I promise, hanging up the phone before she can respond. I keep plenty of those batteries on hand in my supply closet down in the parking garage since I get these calls fairly often.
I throw on some sweats, a tee shirt, slip my feet into some shoes, and then head out on my errand of mercy. I certainly don’t want Aubrey’s sanity to suffer unnecessarily long! I grab a pack of batteries from the cabinet where they are kept, a screwdriver, and a folding step stool. Less than 15 minutes after her distress call I’m knocking on Aubrey’s door.
She opens the door just a crack.
“Hey, Jude! Thanks for coming so quick,” she says, reaching her hand out for the battery. “I can take care of it from here.”
“I’d feel better about doing it myself,” I reply, refusing to just hand them over. “I wouldn’t want a resident to get injured in a fall from a ladder. And anyway, it’s part of my job.”
“Oh,” she says, looking uncertain. “One moment, then.”
She shuts the door in my face.
A few minutes go by before she opens the door for me, dressed in a huge fluffy robe.
“I, uh, needed to get a robe on,” she says by way of explanation.
“Sure,” I say, and head towards the hallway where we generally install the smoke detectors. “I’m surprised the battery has gone dead already. I looked at my notes and it was last changed in March.”
I set up the folding stool and climb up, then begin to unscrew the battery compartment so that I can exchange the battery. A maneuver that takes me only a few minutes, and then I’m screwing the thing back together again. Mission accomplished, and damsel in distress is saved from the insanity that can only come from the incessant chirping of a dying smoke detector.
I climb down from the step stool to see Aubrey only a few feet away, her robe gaping open slightly. I catch a glimpse of what looks like a red lace teddy. One that looks far more likely to be used to attract the male s*x, but is probably too itchy and uncomfortable to sleep in.
“How long has the smoke detector been chirping?” I ask, as I’m suddenly realizing that I hadn’t heard it once since entering the apartment. Not that I’d been in here all that long. But I’m starting to feel slightly suspicious that there might not have been an issue at all.
Is it possible that Aubrey had called me here for the sole purpose of seducing me? I dare not believe that it could be possible, but that’s certainly what it looks like! Or perhaps she wanted the battery for her vibrator?
“Umm… not very long,” she says, blushing a little. I see that the belt of her robe has nearly come undone now, and I’m seeing quite a lot of skin. “Again, thanks for coming.”
“I’ll just go then,” I say, since I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here.
“Yeah,” she says, a strange look on her face. Is it relief? Disappointment? I can’t really tell.
“Goodnight, Aubrey,” I say, then turn and head towards the door. “I’ll see myself out.”
“Goodnight, Greyson,” I hear from behind.
I open the door to leave, and then remember my dad’s wedding and my plan to invite Aubrey as my plus one. I turn around, and see that she’s right behind me. I decide that it’s now or never! If she says no, I’ll just have to tell dad that we broke up.
“By the way, are you doing anything the second weekend in November?” I ask uncertainly.
“Umm… I don’t think I have anything planned that weekend,” she says, taken aback. So much so that her robe is barely covering anything at this point. The view is quite enticing and I’m having difficulty in keeping my eyes on her face at this point. “Why?”
“So the thing is, my dad is getting remarried on November 10th. He and his bride Helen have asked me to bring a date,” I explain quickly, just to get it out before I lose my nerve completely. “So what do you think about being my plus one?”
“I, uh… sure,” she says, initially looking confused but then she smiles at me. “Will this be in Seattle?”
“Uh, no. It’s a destination wedding,” I explain a few of the details. “You might need to take a day or two off of work, as it’s going to be in Maui. On the beach. But you won’t be required to pay for anything. I’ll take care of all the costs.”
“Oh, wow!” Aubrey says, obviously surprised. “Are you sure? That could get really expensive!”
“I’m sure,” I say, then I close the door and step closer to Aubrey. I look into her lovey blue eyes, and see that she’s nervous. “But tell me truth. Why are you all dolled up in a lace teddy and calling me late at night on a Friday to change a battery that I know for a fact was perfectly fine? Did you have something else in mind?”
“I, uh… maybe?” She says, licking her lips in uncertainty. I find it charming. I take her in my arms and draw her closer. She smells very nice.
“Were you hoping I might kiss you?” I ask, my voice low and gravely.
“Yes,” she says breathlessly.
“Aha!” I say triumphantly, and bend down to kiss her. And it’s probably the most incredible kiss of my life!
