Chapter 4

994 Words
A New Beginning (Aria’s POV) __ I wasn’t sure how long I had been walking. Or maybe it was stumbling. Time had stopped making sense the moment Tristan had rejected me. My body ached, my heart shattered, and all I wanted was to disappear into the earth, to not feel the sharp sting of his words anymore. But when the stranger’s hand touched my shoulder, everything seemed to shift. He wasn’t like Tristan. He didn’t look at me with cold eyes or turn his back when I needed him the most. His eyes were warm, almost comforting, as he helped me to my feet. “You can’t keep walking like this,” he said gently, his grip steady. “You need rest.” I wanted to argue, wanted to tell him that I had nothing to rest for, but the exhaustion in my body made it impossible. I was so tired, so broken. I had nothing left to give. The man who had found me didn’t ask me any questions, and I was thankful for that. He just kept leading me through the thick forest, guiding me away from everything I had known. Away from the pack. Away from Tristan. “I’m Marek,” he introduced himself as we walked. His voice was deep and soothing, a stark contrast to the storm raging inside me. “Aria,” I whispered, barely able to lift my head. Marek didn’t seem to push for more information. He just continued walking beside me, his presence a silent comfort in the midst of my despair. After a while, we reached a small, hidden cabin. It wasn’t much, but it felt like a world away from the palace I had once called home. Marek led me inside, where a fire crackled in the hearth, and the air smelled like pine and warmth. I collapsed onto a nearby chair, too tired to even care where I was. Marek went to the kitchen and returned with a cup of warm tea. “Drink this,” he said softly, handing it to me. I took it from his hands without hesitation, the warmth of the liquid soothing my sore throat. My body still trembled from the cold, but at least here, in this small, quiet place, I could breathe. “Thank you,” I muttered, my voice still shaky. “For saving me.” Marek gave a small nod, his eyes thoughtful. “I couldn’t leave you out there,” he said simply. “No one should be left to suffer alone.” I didn’t know why, but his words meant more to me than anything I had heard in a long time. They weren’t empty. They weren’t cold. For the first time, someone actually seemed to care about me. I swallowed the last of the tea and set the cup down. Marek was still standing near the door, watching me with a kind expression. “You’re not alone anymore,” he said, his voice calm but firm. “I won’t let you be. You can stay here as long as you need. No one will hurt you.” I looked at him, still not fully believing his words. How could anyone care for someone like me, someone who had just been rejected by her mate, cast out from the only life I had known? But Marek didn’t seem like someone who would lie to me. His eyes were sincere, his face kind. He wasn’t like Tristan, and for the first time since everything had fallen apart, I felt a small spark of hope. “Why?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. “Why are you helping me?” He paused, looking out the window for a moment before turning his gaze back to me. “Because I can. Because I believe no one should face the world alone, especially not someone who’s been through what you have.” I couldn’t help the tears that came. They fell silently, and I didn’t try to stop them. I was so tired of being strong, of pretending that everything was okay. The pain in my heart was too much to bear, but here, with Marek, I didn’t have to pretend. “I’m so tired,” I whispered, wiping away my tears. “I don’t know how to go on.” “You don’t have to go on alone,” Marek said, his voice gentle. “We’ll figure it out together.” I looked at him, searching his face for any sign that he was just saying the words to make me feel better. But there was nothing there. He meant it. I took a deep breath, letting the warmth of the cabin and his kindness sink into me. I had no idea where this new path would lead, but for the first time in what felt like forever, I wasn’t facing it alone. “Thank you,” I whispered again, my voice soft but full of gratitude. “Thank you for everything.” Marek gave me a small, reassuring smile. “Rest for now. You’ve been through enough. We’ll talk more tomorrow.” I nodded, my eyes heavy with exhaustion. As I lay down on the small bed in the corner of the room, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time—peace. It wasn’t the same as the peace I had felt with Tristan. That peace had been filled with love and dreams of a future together. This peace was different. It was quiet, but it was real. It was something I could hold on to, something I could trust. As I closed my eyes, I felt the pull of sleep dragging me under. The world around me faded, but for the first time in what felt like forever, I wasn’t afraid of what would happen when I woke up. I didn’t know what tomorrow would bring, but for the first time, I was ready to find out.
