Chapter 8 “WOW,” ALICE said. The place had not been a beach cottage. Centered on the sprawling lot at the inland corner of Lagrange and Lakeshore, its wings stretched north and south from the huge main building. The garage had three separate vehicle doors, and was connected to the south wing by a narrow, glass-walled breezeway. Pale blue siding covered everything except the broad, darkly reflective windows. The roof gently sloped from south to north, giving the solar shingles solid sun exposure. A few sticky pine trees stood between the house and the Lakeshore Road sidewalk, creating an illusory barrier between the house and any passersby. A tangle of overgrown, thorny hedges formed an impenetrable barrier along four-lane Lagrange Road. Not that anyone came down Lakeshore any more. Or L
