I COULDN’T get much more useful information out of the increasingly frazzled and distraught Jerry. I told him and Reamer I’d search for Nat Reamer, Janet, the girl in the “negligible,” and Two Backs, then picked up Alice and Ceren at Jack’s. By the time we got to our temporary home, the horizon split the June sun, the day’s stored heat radiating from the ground overpowering the cooler air. Exhaustion gnawed at my every nerve.
