The Upstairs Renter The Upstairs RenterI had just returned to Sault Ste. Marie from a trip to the Wild Atlantic Way along the southwest coast of Ireland, and I was consumed with an unexplainable sense of foreboding. A tour of the monastery ruins on Skellig Michael Island filled my mind with images of long-dead monks. I imagined their spirits returning to their ancient, isolated home, roaming through the ruins, seeking the solitude they had once known. I was doubtful their self-imposed seclusion had drawn them closer to God, but who was I to judge? Each man’s journey to God is as different as the man himself yet in some insignificant way, I had convinced myself that separation from worldly distractions was the only way to purify my body, mind, and soul and discover the Great Infinite.
