She picked up her drink and moved to a back booth, one she always shared with any number of causal friends. They made room for her and voiced their welcomed, but she only nodded. It was crowded, this little place called Lucky’s in St. Ignace, a short drive east of where she lived in Moran. She turned away from her friends and watched the mating gestures of fellow voyeurs. When she turned back, she noticed how the candlelight cast images on the wall and exposed the imitation brick that was torn and peeling away.
