The Placement

1190 Words
I scurried behind him on our way back to the exam room. My mind is racing about my placement. What if it wasn't what I wanted? Will I get to say goodbye to my parents? I hadn't even realized we had made it back until I heard the familiar creak of the door as the examiner opened it for me. "Please get changed and then wait for me there. I need to go get a supervisor." He spoke quickly and took long strides back to the woods, hooking a right back towards another building I hadn't noticed earlier. I calmly walked in and started putting my top and pants back on. They still smelt clean while I was clearly sweaty and ripe. I bent over to reach for my shoes under the couch, and pulled my belongings out of them. As I put on my left shoe, I glanced at my phone now resting on the couch beside me. A little blue light was flashing on it, letting me know I had a new message. I finished with my right shoe and tapped my phone on, typing in my password. Missed message my ass, I had more than I could count! My mom, dad, younger siblings, best friend, even our Alpha and Beta. Asking where I was and what I was doing. I shook my head, it wasn't even 7 yet was it? My phone let me know otherwise that it was nearing 11 PM. Had I been out there that long? I shook my head and started to reply to my mom, I figured she would spread the word. 'My number was high and my test just started not long ago. They are speaking with a supervisor about placing me now. I'm supposed to wait but I'll tell you when I can. Love you.' My text to my mom seemed sufficient and I put my phone into my pocket, followed by my keys and wallet. I picked up a human magazine on architecture and flipped through some very beautiful homes, all with fantastic foliage around them. A small sigh left my lips as I knew I'd never have anything like these establishments, probably being moved packs as an Omega. My browsing was interrupted by a gentle knock at the interior door of the room. Before I could answer a small woman, perhaps not even 5' in height stepped in carefully, and almost floated her way to me. "Are you Iris?" Her voice was high pitched but very melodic, and it matched her small and pointy face. "I am." My eyes never left hers. "I have your placement here in this folder, and I'd like to walk you through it if you don't mind." She gestured towards the sofa next to me and I nodded greedily and moved over to make more room for her. Her small hand ran down the back of her thigh and she smoothed her skirt as she sat. She gently placed the folder on her lap and crossed her hands over it, protecting it from my gaze. "Before we begin, I'd like to compliment you on your performance. We don't get powers often, and definitely not from such a unique wolf. That's why they are usually culled at birth." "What do you mean culled at birth? What does that mean?" I wasn't sure what she meant and maybe that's why most wolves were surprised to see me. "Well you see, every once in a while we have a wolf who's born, let's say, different. Usually, we don't let them reach childhood, it's too risky for a pack to have to take care of an abnormality." Her lips pressed into a slight frown and her eyes were a bit apologetic. "Occasionally we do come across a full grown wolf like yourself, who beats the odds and doesn't need special care. We try to be as fair as possible in placing those wolves. You however, have a power, and so we took extra consideration into your placement." She carefully handed me the folder and I held onto it tightly, gulping down the saliva that had built up in my mouth. "Does this mean I'm not going back to my parents?" She solemnly shook her head and gestured for me to open the folder. I looked over the red folder in my hands and slowly opened it to reveal a single sheet of paper. Written in hand scribed letters were three words, my new rank, and my new pack. I quickly shut the folder and stared wide eyes at her. "What is this? I can't! There's absolutely no way. I can't do that, I can't go there! I trim bushes and plant trees for Goddess' sake! I… I… I just can't!" All she did was quietly nod and her hand calmly reached towards mine. She grasped it lightly and gave me a small smile. "You'll be fine. We are 100% sure in all placement decisions. You will be briefed on everything as we make our way there. You go. Now." She stood and held her hand out for me. I waved it off, I didn't need her help. I stood and my hung head low, my eyes welling up with tears as I stared at the floor. "Please follow me Iris, things will be okay." I trudged behind her as she went out of the interior doors and led me back into the main waiting area of the DWP. Very few wolves were left, but the ones still there after hours were speaking in hushed tones, likely about me and how sad I must look. She led me out the main doors of the building and stopped dead. "Dammit, where is Gerald?" She shifted left and then right, looking for something. Suddenly an inconspicuous black sedan pulled up and out stepped a large man, about 6'5, who looked as if he was rushed out of the door. "Hey Darlene you little minx, why'd you wake me up? I was having a wonderful dream about you kitty cat." The man, who I assume was Gerald, winked at Darlene. She only rolled her eyes. "We have an assignment Gerald. This is Iris, you'll be driving us to her new home." She smiled gently at me and I sighed, opening the car door for myself and settling in. I could hear them talking outside the car. "Not a real lively one you've got there. Aren't they usually a bit more excited?" She stomped over to him and clamped a hand over his mouth. "Hush! This poor girl just wanted to be with her family. This is like throwing her into a lion's den!" Gerald shrugged and got back into the driver's seat, Darlene following behind him to crawl in next to me. She sighed as she sat and began to speak. "Are you ready?" Her brows were raised and she looked at me with concern. I nodded and turned my head to look at the window. Gerald put the car into drive and pulled out of the DWP parking lot to take me to my new life. Luna. Blood Moon.
