In contrast to the dark hallway, this room was bright and had a nice vibrant green couch with orange throw pillows on it, a small coffee table with a few magazines, both human and otherworldly, as well as a fruit basket and waters. The far side of the room had a single panel glass door leading to a wooded area. The most interesting part of the room was the man leaning against the wall next to the door, wearing a pair of slacks and a pole shirt with the DWP logo on the left breast. He was reading a small pocket sized book and had a clean look to him that was very 50s. He glanced up at me, his eyes widened, and he straightened up. With his more correct posture I could see that he was possibly 6'4", fairly average for a male wolf, and unlike the woman at the counter, had a lighter skinned complexion. His hair and eyes were still dark, but his skin was more of a deep olive tone. He cleared his throat and walked over to me.
"Height?"
"6' even sir" I stood up straight to match his energy.
"A bit larger than a normal female. Much uh… whiter too." He glanced away for a second, almost embarrassed. "You can leave your clothes on the couch, I'm going to need to verify you can shift before we do anything else." I frowned a bit, and didn't move.
"Now would be nice."
Now it was my turn to clear my throat.
"Um, maybe you could turn around? I've never done this before."
He gasped. "You've never shifted? What the hell are you doing here then?!" He stomped his foot a bit.
"No no, I've shifted, I've just never uh, gotten naked in front of anyone before." I clenched my teeth and gave him an uncomfortable smile. He rolled his eyes and turned around.
"Please be quick, I don't have all day. I've got two more Alpha kids coming right after you and I want to go home."
Alpha kids? Did I hear him correctly? He shouldn't be testing me, but maybe the last kid was taking longer than I thought to be tested. I shook my head to clear my thoughts and started to carefully undress and fold my clothes up on the couch, with my shoes tucked neatly underneath. I placed my phone, keys, and wallet inside of my slightly sweaty sneakers and backed up a bit. My hands instinctively reached to cover areas I had never shown another being and I let out a little squeak before speaking.
"I'm ready." I whispered. He turned slowly and tilted his head towards the door.
"Let's go then. As soon as you step out the door, please shift."
I took small steps, careful not to expose myself as I got closer to the examiner and the door. My handle trembled slightly as I took it off my nether region to reach for the handle. My fingers just barely touched it as I put all my pressure into pushing it down and opening the door. It creaked open and I stepped out onto the grass, observing the man stepping out with me.
"Begin now." He said sternly.
I sucked in a tremendous amount of air as I reached out to my wolf, Edelweiss.
"Hey lady, you in there?" I gently asked.
"Of course, I'm always here whether you like it or not." She was very straightforward and to the point. "Do we need to shift now?"
"Afraid so. Does it hurt just as bad the second time?"
"No. Shouldn't hurt at all. You'd know that if you ever let me out though." I frowned at her words. She was right, but we were Omegas, we had no need. My parents were also opposed as they said my wolf was different. I didn't know what they meant but I never disobeyed them on anything. I cracked my neck in preparation and took a few more deep breaths.
"I'm ready Edelweiss. Let's shift."
I could feel her rise up to the surface and start to take over. Her thoughts clouded mine and took the foremost spot in our mind. My bones began to crack and I lurched forward, kneeling on the ground. My arms shot out to brace myself, and as I hunched over, face inches from the grass, I started to grow. My limbs stretched out and grew long snow white fur as I watched my fingers shrink back into paws. She was right though, there was no pain, only time. I'd seen most wolves be able to shift within seconds, but mine was taking some time. By the time the shift had fully taken place, Edelweiss shook out her fur and stood proud in front of the examiner. The only thing to stand out amongst her pristine white fur were her striking purple eyes. As an albino we should have had red or blue eyes, but the mix we got was always a surprise to any who met us. Edelweiss' stare bore into the soul of the examiner as he gasped.
"You're huge!" A smile came across his face and he held up a hand.
"Wait here a moment, I will also shift and we can begin the test."
Edelweiss gave a curt nod and turned away from the man, giving him some privacy before he needed to ask, not that she cared about seeing a naked human. Shuffling could be heard and like she would do to me, I spoke up in her mind.
"Do you think we'll pass?"
"We don't even know what the test is stupid girl. I wish you would have asked more questions while you had a chance. What if he wants to spar? We've had no formal training. All you care about is grass." She snapped.
I kept my mouth shut, she was right, I'd not given any actual thought to the test because I was sure I'd be put right back at home. A moment had passed and out stepped the examiners wolf. His wolf was of course massive, but not as big as us, and like most wolves, a dusty black with a few spots of gray. He took one giant step towards Edelweiss and had to look a bit up at her. His voice flooded our mind.
"My name is Fang, I'm going to walk you through a few small trials, and then my counterpart will determine your placement. Follow me, and keep up."
The wolf sprinted towards the woods, dashing around large trees and barking at us to follow. Edelweiss took no time at all and followed suit, her paws pounding on the ground, crushing twigs and leaves, leaving a path of destruction in her wake. In no time at all we had caught up to the examiner and she had to slow her stride to stay behind, careful not to overstep despite her size. Fang slowed as he came to a clearing in the middle of the wooded area, and trotted to the middle.
"From here, we can assess your skills. We will spar and then I, still in this form, will spar your human. I will try not to kill either of you." He stood his ground and started to bare his teeth, letting us know why his name was Fang. His teeth were sharp, a big scraggly, and looked like they could inflict a tantamount of damage to any being. They dripped with saliva as he dug his claws in the ground, readying himself for an attack. Edelweiss was calm, and quietly circled around him, waiting for the fight to begin.
"First to strike wins." Fang bellowed out.
Edelweiss continued her stalking, the opportunity would come eventually. After she had made a few rounds, Fang jumped out and attempted to clamp down onto her, but she leapt out of the way and slid behind him, grasping his hind leg with her mouth. I had no idea she would be able to do that. She released the examiner and came around to face him.
"Let the human out now." Fang ordered.
"She can't fight. She's never been trained. You'll kill her with one bite of your infected mouth." She was taunting him, almost as if she wanted to continue fighting.
"Then I'll kill her. If you don't let her out now I will have you eliminated. You'll be sent to the mines where I'm sure you'll die."
Edelweiss snarled and scratched at the ground.
"It's time. Don't lose." She huffed at me and let me take over control.
