Chapter 2. Fascinating New Friends
Sam and his dad stood in the animal shelter’s empty reception room until a lady dressed in a sweatshirt, jeans, and sneakers marched briskly in through a side door. Her short brown hair, nice smile, and twinkling eyes reminded Sam of his grandmother. He liked her immediately. She carried a clipboard and said, “I’ll be with you as soon as I finish supervising the unloading of this shipment of puppy food.”
On the wall, Sam noticed a large bulletin board with snapshots of happy people and their grinning dogs. Studying the pictures, he tried to imagine what it would be like having his very own dog. He imagined playing outside with the dog, but his musings were cut short by a jab of dread. What if his new dog found out that almost everything scared him? Imme
