For once, Amara woke up without checking her phone for mysterious messages.
She considered that a victory.
By the time she reached Blackwood Holdings, she had already convinced herself that she was going to have a completely normal day.
No investigations.
No questions about her father.
And definitely no getting involved in Kian Blackwood's mysterious life.
“Good morning,” Noah called.
Amara looked over.
He was holding two cups of coffee.
“You're early.”
“I've decided to become responsible.”
She took one of the cups.
“That sounds dangerous.”
“Very.”
They laughed.
The morning went smoothly.
Amara spent most of it helping prepare documents for a meeting. She was beginning to understand the company's system, and for the first time since she'd started, she didn't have to ask someone where everything was.
Around eleven, Mrs. Carter walked over.
“Amara, Mr. Blackwood needs the presentation file.”
“Right away.”
She hurried to the executive office.
Kian was alone, reading through some documents.
She placed the laptop on his desk.
“The presentation is ready.”
He checked it.
“You've improved.”
Amara blinked.
“Was that a compliment?”
“Don't get used to it.”
She smiled.
“I'll treasure the moment.”
Kian looked up.
There was the faintest hint of amusement in his eyes.
Then his phone rang.
His expression immediately became serious.
He answered.
“Yes?”
Amara turned to leave, but she heard him say something that made her stop.
“No. Not yet.”
She glanced back.
Kian's back was toward her.
“I said I don't want her involved.”
Amara's curiosity returned.
Her?
She quickly walked out before he noticed she was listening.
Back at her desk, she tried to forget it.
It wasn't her business.
Five minutes later, Noah appeared.
“Lunch?”
“Already?”
“It's almost one.”
Amara checked the time.
He was right.
They headed to the cafeteria.
“You know what I've noticed?” Noah asked.
“What?”
“You don't complain about the job anymore.”
“Maybe I'm getting used to it.”
“Or maybe you're getting used to him.”
Amara nearly choked on her drink.
“Kian?”
“Who else?”
“Absolutely not.”
Noah grinned.
“Sure.”
“You're imagining things.”
“I'm just observing.”
“Observe quietly.”
He laughed.
After lunch, Amara returned to her desk and found a small box sitting beside her computer.
She opened it.
A new notebook.
She frowned.
There was a sticky note attached.
For your notes. You keep using loose paper. — K
Amara stared at it.
Kian had noticed?
She looked toward his office.
The blinds were open.
He was working at his desk.
As if sensing her gaze, he looked up.
Their eyes met.
Amara held up the notebook.
“Thank you.”
Kian simply nodded.
No smile.
No explanation.
But somehow, that tiny gesture stayed with her for the rest of the afternoon.
When she finally left the office, she slipped the notebook into her bag.
She didn't know why a simple gift from her boss had made her smile.
Maybe because it wasn't really about the notebook.
It was the fact that Kian Blackwood, the man who seemed to notice everything, had noticed something about her.
Something small.
Something ordinary.
And for the first time, Amara wondered if there was more to him than the cold billionaire everyone else seemed to see.
