Instead of a dark place or a desolate forest, we pass through an impeccably curated estate gate without the guards so much as glancing at the car's plates.
The driver brings the luxury sedan to a smooth stop in front of a modern storey building that seems to claw at the sky.
"Mr. Banks said to reach out to this person," the driver says, passing me a card with an industrial-looking logo.
I take it absent-mindedly, my mind refusing to process the card because it is too busy admiring the view before me.
I am gawking. My jaw is literally hanging open.
I’ve seen luxury.
I’ve been in Banks’s high-rise penthouse. But his place feels like a mansion—established, rich, and modern.
This place... this is a skyscraper of pure glass, steel, and arrogant, modern architecture.
It looks less like a place people live and more like a high-end, futuristic resort.
"Is this... is this his new place?" I ask alighting, my voice a whisper of disbelief.
The driver looks at me through the rearview mirror, and I see a flicker of amusement.
"It’s yours, Miss Eleanor."
Hold up!
"Mine?!"
Before my brain can formulate a single, rational response, he puts the car back into gear and drives off, leaving me standing in the center of a spotless garage lined with luxury cars, facing a massive, tall glass door.
I look around, in front of me is a large coconut tree and behind it holds an equally tall building.
"Mine?" I rush inside, my legs doing so even as my mind screams that this is a hallucination.
The door is unlocked.
I pull out my phone and call Banks immediately. I need confirmation.
I need to hear the logic, or I will collapse right here on the polished Italian marble floor. As expected, it falls to voicemail.
Voicemail Of course.
This is Banks. The man hardly talks outside of groans of pleasure, sharp orders, and apparently, grand, life-changing financial gestures.
I don't have time to wait for a call back. I start texting, my fingers moving like they are high on adrenaline.
Me: A skyscraper? Master? You are spoiling me. What is this? Why is it mine?
Read. No reply.
I move into the lobby. It’s expansive, filled with abstract art and massive indoor trees. It smells like luxury, like something made of jasmine and money.
I find an elevator that opens via a keypad. There is only one destination option: the penthouse.
Me: I’m in the elevator. I should be raging that I didn't get a choice, but it smells so good in here that I'm currently okay with it. You are terrifying master .
He still doesn't reply but my phone starts ringing with rows of messages from my siblings
Texts as follow
Sister: Where on earth are you?!
Older brother : Where the f**k you dey?
Sister: I swear... Call back if..
My phone starts ringing and I pick
"Hello brother"
"Hello yourself "
"Switch to video call" My brother orders in his deep, protective, big brother voice that I know means NO ROOM FOR REFUSAL.
Now this is issue.. Anyways, standing right outside, I do the switch and my sister joins the call
"What the f**k!" She screams. Definitely taking in the opulence of the building at my background
"I thought you work in perfume store, when did you become a cleaner?" My brother question and I chuckle
"I'm no.... " I close my mouth, thinking against the truth.
"Where on earth is this gorgeous baby located? " My sister question
"I came to do business for a client. Was just scared so I decided to tell you both"
"I was working, had to stop when I picked my phone and saw your message. " My brother points out. Relief washing through him
"This place is super gorgeous " my sister say and I nod
"Be careful. Spoil nothing. Do your job and leave peacefully" I nod at my brother's warning. Unable to talk further in case I spill
"TAKE PICTURES!" my sister yells. Demonstrating with her hands
"Take pinjursssss." My brother mocks and I find myself smiling
"Don't go and study for your entrance exam." He adds which makes her start explaining how passing exam won't give her this kind of luxury.
"Let her be, she's just fifteen "
"Fifteen is the new adult. Let her go study"
My sister protest. I laugh. Feeling happy just talking to them. We drift into my brother's electrical apprenticeship
"I think you should start preparing for university now brother" I say, treading softly
"With which money?"
"You worked and paid for my education" I start, finding a soft way to make him go to school without worrying about money
"I'm working and can pay for you" His laughter travels over my phone
"Electrical engineering costs double your biochemistry and you think we have the funds for that?"
"Just try"
"When you get home call us"
and he successfully evaded me telling him to further his study.
"Me I need a better phone"
My sister says and heavy weight settle in me. I've more than enough to spend on you but how will I explain getting it?
"You can carry gun and go steal it" my brother mocks
"Show us the apartment!"
"Why not fly inside? " my brother reprimand her
"It's okay" I say, walking them through the outside building. Showing them as far as I can
"It's big and scary" She says and we all concur
"How many people sleep here.. They must be up to five because just three people will get me scared" She continues and I don't tel her it's I who will be sleeping here
Alone.
"Let's not delay you. Get back to work "
I nod. Feeling sad I can't share the money with them, else I'll confess how I got it.
My brother will stride here and reprimand Banks like a baby.
"Bye" I hang up and press the elevator till it dings and opens directly into the apartment
