Gray
Anger seeps through my veins immediately Jack is out of my grasp. My eyes trail to the girl in front of me .
The moment I set my eyes on her I know she is nothing but trouble. I don't know who she is, or what she is, but I know she's something else.
I pick her up from the ground, but immediately I touch her, I feel this warm sensation I do not like. When I can get close enough to Carter, my beta, I dump her into his arms.
He shoots me a puzzled look before asking, “Where is Jack's head?”
I scoff, “He's one lucky bastard, we'll consider this Christmas for him.” Carter still looks confused but I pay him no attention, instead, I walk forward listening to his footsteps as he follows me.
We arrive at the packhouse, a few miles away from the campus. Living far from humans was a decision made long ago and my pack lives by it.
Without any questions asked, Carter takes her to one of the extra bedrooms then joins me in the conference room.
He's hesitant at first but finally asks, “Who on earth is that?”
I sigh at his question but quickly explain everything that happens, including what I plan to do with our guest. As expected, Carter objects immediately.
“She didn't do anything wrong Gray, she was just trying to save her friend. You'd do the same for me.”
Carter's always a voice of reason but this isn't what I need at the moment, so I hit him where he can't recover. “Do you know how many lives were lost because of Jack's attack on our food supply? More than a dozen warriors, including Adrian!”
My question silences him.
“So you want to use her as bait, and kill her friend right in front of her?” he asks me with a certain tone in his voice and now that I hear him out loud it sounds awful.
“What would you have me do?” I ask him even if I don't plan to listen.
“Rough her up a little and send her home.”
Truthfully, I had no idea why I took her. I thought it was the rage of losing a target because of a human, but it seemed like there was more.
That feeling, that damn feeling that made me stand down when I had an opening to take Jack out once and for all. I curse under my breath.
“I can't,” I say to Carter.
“Why?” he questions, his eyes brows forming a crease. He tilts his head at, “She saw your face!” he affirms, brushing a frustrated hand through his hair.
That was the only part I didn't include in my explanation of what happened, she saw my face. I turn to face Carter who is already fuming, “Look, let's just sleep on it, maybe we can talk tomorrow when we're all settled.”
Carter looks at me for a quick second, and takes his eyes off, “So what? She's like a keepsake from battle?” he asks in a tone which I hate. He can clearly see through me.
He knows I'm fascinated by this strange creature. Her bravery and loyalty are remarkable, but if I could, I would snap her little neck off.
My name is Grayson Carson of the Carson clan, and the Alpha of Moon Crescent Pack. Today is another day on the job, we've taken a hit for the second time in three months.
Carter Jacob is the beta of the Moon Crescent Pack, and our gamma Adrian, just passed. We set out on an expedition this morning to kill all those responsible for his fall.
Our rival Pack, The Night Walker's, championed by Jack, the beta, attacked an incoming shipment of food and other supplies. In the process, he killed several warriors, including Adrian.
In the past few months, these attacks have been getting too common, and I suspect there's a mole. Food isn't what they want because the Night Walker Pack has enough to last them an entire year. I know because I always survey. I like to know the strength of my enemy.
What they want is to crippled us by stealing our resources. They're drawing us out for a full-on war, but why?
The Alpha of The Night Walker Pack, Aegir, disappeared some months back and since then, Jack has been in charge.
He's a pain in my neck and tonight was my chance to strike at him.
After taking his Gamma, Eris, hostage, he had no other choice than to come to the place I chose. Just then, we were ambushed. Jack took a huge blow before he managed to escape.
I was so surprised when I saw his face. He had been right under my nose all this while and I didn't know. Posing as Amira's friend. I had known this guy for a long time.
The anger I felt in that moment made me strike, hard. He was bloody and unconscious, my perfect chance to get my revenge for his deception. When I managed to get my chance that little rat came in and ruined everything!
“You're not going to sleep?” Carter asked pulling me out of my reverie. It's dark already when I realize how long I have been sitting here.
“I am, I'll be right up.” As I walk through the pack ground, I'm greeted by all the warriors on night duty. Since what happened, we had doubled security.
Being an Alpha without a mate is not the best thing to happen to anyone, but I try to make up for the only insufficiency I have.
I walk to my room and as I slum into bed, I hear my wolf growl in my head. He's restless and so am I. Instead of lying in bed knowing fully well I won't fall asleep, I head to the training ground to do some sparring with anyone that's available.
I'm lucky I caught one of the warriors also having a late night fight.
We fight for a while and I try to go easy on him. The last thing I need is more death, and on my account?
After a while, he switches out with someone else, the exhaustion on his face evident. The rotation goes on till I can see the sun rise. This has been my life for a while now, insomnia.
“Good morning Alpha,” I see one of the warriors peek his head out of the window.
“Alpha Gray, she's awake.” I hear another voice say, but this isn't someone I can see, it's Carter. I practically fly up the stairs to find my visitor half awake, steering uncomfortably in her sleep.
There are beads of sweat dripping from her forehead and I can't help but wonder if she has horrible nightmares just like me.
We stand there in silence when Amira, Carter's mate comes in. Amira is one of the strongest female warriors in the whole pack, but the sight of her annoys me. She is a fire-weilder and Carter is a water-weilder among the other amazing gifts Iyana, the moon goddess had given him.
They are a perfect match. It makes me feel so empty at times, but all I can do is be happy for my best-friend.
I record the puzzled look on Amira's face as she stares at a person laying on the bed.
“Ivelle?” she screams on impulse. So that's her name, Ivelle. I stare at Amira in confusion. As we all share puzzled looks, our guest of honor wakes up.
Mate
I stare in utter confusion. This was the same feeling I got last night, but this confirms it, how can a human be my mate? Am I spiraling? Did I come up with this fantasy in my desperation to find my fate?
Carter stares at me, utterly confused.
“She's my mate?” I say to Carter through our mind link, because only he is supposed to hear me. Carter and I share a puzzled look. Could this be Iyana punishing me for the sins of my father?
The confusion in my eyes grows and I hear a dozen footsteps build and end in front of the door. Someone pushes the door gently and enters. It's Levi, the chief warrior.
“Alpha! She's your mate?” he asks. I wonder how he knows until I reaze I didn't just share this information with Carter, I told the whole damn pack with the pack link!
