The young man’s piercing gaze locked onto Nelsy, his stance defensive yet eerily composed. Lizzy and Jace stood frozen behind him, the weight of the moment sinking in like a tangible force.
Nelsy swallowed hard. “I don’t know how we got here, but—”
“You’ve crossed into a protected timeline,” the man interrupted, his tone cold. “That tree should have stopped you.”
“Clearly, it didn’t,” Jace muttered, earning a glare from Lizzy.
Nelsy took a cautious step forward. “We’re not here to cause harm. We’re just trying to understand…everything. The magic, the forest, the Warden. It’s all connected, and I think I’m—”
“The Wielder,” the man finished for him, his glowing eyes narrowing. “You’re not ready. And this is not your time.”
The weight of his words pressed down on Nelsy. “What does that even mean? Why am I the Wielder? What am I supposed to do?”
The man hesitated, his grip on the staff loosening slightly. “You think you’re the first to bear this burden?”
Lizzy stepped forward, her curiosity overriding her fear. “Wait—you’re saying there have been others? Like Nelsy?”
“Yes,” the man replied, his tone grim. “But none of them survived the forest’s trials. The magic chooses its bearer, but it doesn’t guarantee their success. If you fail…” He trailed off, his gaze darkening.
Jace frowned. “Fail at what? Facing the Warden? Unlocking the magic? Give us something to work with here!”
The man’s eyes flickered toward Jace, then back to Nelsy. “The Warden is only the beginning. The true test lies in the Nexus—the point where all timelines converge. The Wielder must protect it from collapsing, or everything we know will unravel.”
“The Nexus?” Nelsy repeated, his voice barely a whisper.
The man nodded. “It’s the heart of the forest’s magic, hidden deep within its core. But the path is treacherous, guarded by forces older and stronger than you can imagine. To reach it, you’ll need to face your deepest fears and prove your worth.”
Nelsy’s chest tightened. He thought back to the tree’s cryptic message: Face your fear, Wielder. Only then can you reclaim the light.
“But why me?” Nelsy asked, his frustration bubbling to the surface. “I didn’t ask for this. I didn’t choose this.”
“The magic chose you,” the man said simply. “It always does. And it doesn’t care what you want.”
The weight of the revelation settled over the group like a storm cloud. Lizzy and Jace exchanged uncertain glances, the enormity of the situation sinking in.
“So what happens now?” Lizzy asked, breaking the silence.
The man studied Nelsy for a long moment before speaking. “If you’re truly the Wielder, then you’ll need to prepare. The Nexus will call to you when the time is right, but until then, you must master your powers and understand the forest’s secrets.”
Jace crossed his arms. “And you’re just going to leave us to figure all this out on our own? No offense, but a little guidance wouldn’t hurt.”
The man’s expression softened slightly. “I’ll give you this.” He held out the staff, its wood glowing faintly in his hand. “It’s tied to the forest’s magic. With it, you’ll be able to sense the hotspots and navigate the paths to the Nexus.”
Nelsy hesitated before stepping forward and taking the staff. The moment his fingers closed around it, a surge of energy shot through him, almost knocking him off balance. Images flashed through his mind—glimpses of the Nexus, swirling with light and shadow, and the Warden, standing guard over a crumbling gateway.
“You’ll feel the pull,” the man said. “Follow it, but be cautious. The forest tests not only your strength but your heart. If you let fear or doubt consume you, it will devour you whole.”
Lizzy touched Nelsy’s arm, grounding him. “We’ll figure this out, Nelsy. Together.”
The man’s gaze softened further, almost imperceptibly. “Good. You’ll need them. The Wielder may be chosen, but no one survives this alone.”
Before they could ask more questions, the ground beneath them began to tremble. The air shimmered as the trees around them blurred, their shapes dissolving like sand in the wind.
“What’s happening?” Jace shouted, gripping Lizzy’s arm.
“The timeline is resetting,” the man said calmly. “You need to leave. Now.”
“How?” Nelsy asked, panic creeping into his voice.
“Trust the staff,” the man replied. “And trust yourself.”
With that, the glowing runes beneath them reappeared, and the portal from earlier began to form.
Lizzy grabbed Nelsy’s hand. “Let’s go!”
The trio stepped through the portal as the world around them unraveled, the man’s voice echoing in their ears one last time:
“Remember, Wielder—the past holds the key.”
They stumbled back into the present, the familiar sights and sounds of the clearing grounding them. The tree stood as it had before, its bark glowing faintly.
Nelsy looked down at the staff in his hand, its energy humming softly against his palm.
“Well,” Jace said, brushing dirt off his jacket. “That wasn’t terrifying at all.”
Lizzy ignored him, her focus on Nelsy. “What do we do now?”
Nelsy tightened his grip on the staff, his resolve hardening. “We prepare. The Nexus is out there, and if the past holds the key, we’re going to find it.”
For the first time, he felt a glimmer of clarity—of purpose. The journey ahead would be perilous, but he wasn’t alone.
And for the first time, that felt like enough.
