When the Ice Bleeds

548 Words
The sound came first. A low hum that seemed to rise from the ground itself — not a sound of life, but of something remembering it. Aria stumbled backward as the figure beneath the ice moved. Its body was carved of frost and silver veins, its eyes mirrors of her own. When it spoke, its voice was a thousand whispers braided into one. “The Luna awakens. The bond has been sealed.” Kael stepped in front of her, sword raised, the glow from his mark flaring in warning. “Who are you?” The figure turned its gaze to him. “The one who carries her fire. The one who will break.” The ground shuddered. Cracks spread through the ice like veins of light, and from each fracture, a faint shimmer of blood trickled upward — red against blue, warm against frozen. Aria’s breath caught. “The ice… it’s bleeding.” Kael didn’t answer. His instincts screamed danger, but something else pulsed through him too — a strange, ancient recognition that wasn’t his own. The Sentinel rose fully from the ice, its body shifting between solid and spectral. “We are the bound. The first wolves. The memory of her rage.” Its gaze fell on Aria. “You carry the mark of the one who betrayed the Moon.” Aria’s pulse quickened. “Betrayed her?” The Sentinel nodded slowly. “The Moon gave the gift of flame to her Luna so that light would endure the night. But the Luna’s heart turned against her — she burned the Goddess’s temple to free her kind from her control. For that rebellion, the curse was born.” Kael froze. “The curse… came from the Moon herself?” The Sentinel’s expression flickered — sorrow, regret, something almost human. “Balance was broken that day. The Goddess fractured. Her wrath became prophecy. And her chosen would suffer her sin until one dared to ignite the bond again.” Aria’s throat tightened. “So the curse I carry… it’s not punishment. It’s her vengeance.” “And her hope,” the Sentinel added softly. “Only the cursed can unmake the curse.” The wind howled through the Vale, and the mark beneath Aria’s collarbone seared with pain. She dropped to her knees, clutching her chest as light poured through her fingers. Kael caught her before she fell, but the energy spilling from her body burned his skin. He didn’t let go. “Aria, fight it,” he growled. She looked up through tears of light. “It’s not fighting me… it’s calling me.” Her words echoed through the mountains, and somewhere in the distance, the frost cracked like thunder. The Sentinel’s voice rose again, heavy with warning. “The fire beneath the ice has woken. What she dreams next will decide whether the world burns… or is reborn.” Then the Sentinel vanished — dissolving into snow and light. Kael held her tightly as the last echo faded, his breath ragged. “What dream?” he demanded. Aria’s voice was barely a whisper. “The one I saw in the vision.” She turned toward the horizon — where the snow now glowed faintly red. “The dream of ashes.”
