The Vision of Ashes

760 Words
The frost wind carried the sound of a thousand whispers, as if the Vale itself remembered every soul that had crossed it — and every one that never returned. Aria pressed a trembling hand to her chest. The Oracle’s voice still echoed within her — “The fire will rise from your ruin, Luna marked by shadow.” Her breath came in uneven bursts, visible against the cold, and Kael’s presence behind her burned like a second heartbeat. “Aria,” he said softly, but even his voice felt like thunder in this quiet place. “You’re shaking.” She forced herself to straighten. “I’m fine.” That was a lie. Her pulse thundered beneath her skin, every nerve alive with something she couldn’t name — fear, maybe. Or power. Or both. The curse within her stirred, restless, as if the Oracle’s words had loosened its grip on silence. The snow underfoot shimmered faintly, like scattered embers hidden beneath ice. Aria blinked, and for the briefest moment, the white valley turned red. The scent of smoke filled her lungs. Then — flames. The world shifted. She was no longer in the Frost Vale. She stood in a vast field of ash. The moon above her was bleeding silver tears, and the ground burned beneath her feet. This isn’t real… it can’t be real. She tried to move, but her body felt weightless, unanchored — a soul torn from its vessel. All around her, shadows screamed, their voices twisted into her name. “Luna…” “Cursed one…” “Chosen, doomed…” Her knees buckled. She fell, palms sinking into the ashen soil, and when she looked up — she saw herself. A version of her, cloaked in black flame, eyes silver and merciless. The cursed Luna. The future she feared. “You can’t run from what you are,” the shadow version whispered, her voice eerily calm. “Every bond you fight, every truth you bury — it will burn the world in your stead.” Aria’s breath broke. “No… I won’t become you.” “You already are.” The ground trembled. Fire spread in waves, devouring the horizon. The air tasted like grief and blood. Aria screamed — but no sound left her lips. ⸻ “Aria!” Kael’s voice shattered the illusion. He caught her just as her body collapsed into the snow, eyes fluttering, her skin fever-hot despite the freezing air. His mark — the faint glow at his throat — burned brighter, reacting to hers. He could feel it. The bond between them thrummed like wildfire, and for the first time, Kael wasn’t sure if it was meant to save her — or consume her. “Breathe,” he ordered, voice low and rough as he cradled her. His hand pressed against her cheek, the frost melting beneath his touch. “Look at me, Luna. Come back.” Her lashes trembled. A faint whimper escaped her lips — then a whisper. “It was burning… everything was burning.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “What did you see?” She opened her eyes — silver, glowing faintly in the dusk. “Ashes,” she murmured. “The world… and me.” For a moment, neither spoke. The wind howled through the mountains, carrying with it the scent of something ancient — something awakening. Kael pulled her closer, his breath ghosting against her hair. “Whatever you saw, it won’t happen. I won’t let it.” “You can’t stop fate, Kael,” she said softly. His gaze darkened. “Then I’ll burn fate itself before it touches you.” Her heart clenched at the vow in his voice — fierce, dangerous, real. The bond between them pulsed again, heat flaring beneath her skin. For the first time, she didn’t pull away. She wanted to believe him. But deep down, she could still feel the fire — waiting. ⸻ Hours later, as the moon climbed higher, Aria sat awake beside their campfire. Kael had gone silent, standing guard a few paces away, his silhouette sharp against the cold glow of the snow. She could still see the vision every time she closed her eyes. The ashes. The other her. The fire that refused to die. Something inside her whispered that this was just the beginning — that the Oracle’s words were more than a warning. They were a countdown. And somewhere, beneath the ice and fear and half-spoken truths between her and Kael, the curse was waking.
