The Council’s Whisper

469 Words
The fortress never truly slept. Even before dawn, its corridors breathed with motion—guards changing posts, servants lighting torches, whispers darting like insects through the halls. Aria heard them all from behind her locked door. The cursed wolf. The King’s captive. The mark that glows like moonfire. Each rumor twisted tighter around her name until it felt like a noose. She tried to stay still, but the mark beneath her sleeve throbbed in answer to every whisper outside. When the lock clicked, she already knew who it was. Kael entered without the crown, dressed in black that seemed woven from shadow. “They’ve heard,” he said flatly. “By sunrise the council will demand to see you.” “Then let them,” Aria replied. “I’m done hiding.” He gave a low, humorless sound. “You don’t understand what these men will do for power. They fear what they can’t claim.” “Then they should fear me.” For a moment, silence. Then—unexpectedly—Kael smiled. Not cruelly this time, but like someone glimpsing a storm he couldn’t stop. “You sound like a queen already.” He turned to the window, arms folded. “I should have sent you to the dungeons. My generals think I’ve lost my mind keeping you here.” “Have you?” she asked. His head tilted slightly, eyes catching the first edge of dawn. “If I had, would it matter?” The air thickened again, the mark burning beneath her skin until it glowed faintly through the fabric. He noticed. They both pretended not to. A knock shattered the tension. Kael’s Beta, a scar-lined warrior named Daren, bowed stiffly at the door. “The council convenes, my king. They await your decision regarding… the girl.” Kael’s expression hardened. “Tell them the girl is under my protection.” Daren hesitated. “That will not please Lord Varyn.” “It isn’t his pleasure I care about.” When the Beta left, Kael faced Aria again. “You’ll stay here. Don’t speak to anyone. If they come for you, show them nothing.” “And if they force me?” His voice dropped to a promise. “Then I’ll remind them who their king is.” He strode out before she could answer. Through the window she watched him cross the courtyard toward the council tower, every step radiating power and defiance. Around him the fortress stirred—wolves bowing, murmuring. The cursed girl. The king who protects her. Aria pressed her palm to the cold glass. The mark pulsed once, as if echoing his heartbeat far below. Something told her that when Kael walked into that chamber, the kingdom itself would begin to change—and neither of them would leave it untouched.
