Ethan stayed in his truck even after Jake pulled up behind him. The headlights stayed on for a long minute before cutting off. Jake got out slow, hands in his pockets. No yelling yet. That felt worse. Ethan stepped out too. “You said you wanted to talk.” Jake stopped halfway up the driveway. The streetlight caught the side of his face. He looked tired more than pissed. “Yeah. I do.” Jake kicked at a loose rock. “This is f****d, man. All of it.” Ethan leaned back against his truck. “You think I don’t know that?” “We’ve been friends since sixth grade. You remember when my dad took us camping and you fell in the river trying to show off?” Jake gave a short laugh that died quick. “Now I can’t even look at you without wanting to swing again.
