Chapter 3
Kian could be seen pacing to and fro in his chamber, inhaling and exhaling heavy breaths as his mind reeled with different thoughts.
What had he done?
He had abandoned his mate in the dungeon under the influence of the councils and his parents. He hated the fact that he lied to her. He hated the fact that she was suffering for something she didn't commit.
It'd be a few days to his coronation, and in that few days, he'd be mating with someone else that wasn't of his childhood friend and mate.
Flashback...
"What's going on, Dad?" Kian asked as he stepped into the chamber, his eyes sliding across the room to see his parents.
The Luna moved uncomfortably her seat as he approached them. "We need to tell you something, Kian."
His brows quirked, eyes shone with confusion. "About what?"
The two couples exchanged glances at themselves, and back to their son. "You can't make Penny your mate. Listen to me son, we want what's good for you and the pack—"
"What the f**k, Mom? She's my mate, and I can't reject her!"
"I'm not saying you should reject—"
"Well, that's what you're obviously trying to say!"
The Luna clenched her jaw, anger visible in her eyes. "If it's rejection, then let it be so! Besides, she is just an omega! Don't you dare go against our order, Kian!"
"Mom..."
"That's the final decision, Kian. Go against me, and you won't love the other side of me." Alpha Nathan seethed with equal anger.
....
Present.
A sharp knock came from the door as Asher, his Beta walked in after Kian's permission.
"The Luna sent for you, Alpha." Asher signalled.
"Mother? Tell her I would be there soon." Kian said dryly, his face scrunched up as anger sizzled through him. Even if he wanted to do something, it'd be worthless.
Nothing could be done—It was too late.
. . . .
It's been two days since Penny had been in the dungeon, looking disheveled and haggard. They merely served her food to eat or water to drink. The guards around kept making mockery of her, and spewing horrible words at her like how they'd use her after she leaves.
Though, fear lingers on her whenever they spewed those with her, but knowing she wasn't just an Omega, and the Alpha's mate, she didn't bother paying heeds to their vagabonds.
Suddenly, her eyes caught the sight of one of the guards unlocking the bars. "Get up and leave. You've been released." Said his husky creepy voice. Shell shocked and deadpanned, Penny struggled back on her feet, limping out of the dungeons that was filled rats and webs, lingering on every dark corners.
Had the Luna released her?
Pains wracked through every parts of her body that she could barely walk like how a normal person would, but she held it in, walking as possible as she could.
Smile brimming on her face, Penny thought her mate had saved her and would come to find her but that was her thought which she needed to jolt out from. As she limped, they eyes of the guards watched her with lust and distaste. One of them smacked his lips like a delicious meal was being served at it. Penny swiftly looked away as she continued limping out of the place.
"She's so ripe, man. I'll make sure I have a taste of her after she gets rejected for sure." Penny heard one of the guards voice from the other end when she finally exited the place. Tears blurred her vision and she hurriedly wiped it before they reached her cheeks
Why was all this happening to her?
Why was the Moon Goddess being cruel to her?
"You were thinking what I was thinking. She looks so beautiful. Was this what our Alpha enjoys from her?" Another one said. She clenched her fist as she walked, wishing something could be done to shut their shitty mouths.
"She's going to get rejected anyway. Let's wait until tonight."
At the mention of tonight, Penny's ears perked up as she figured out what the day was— It was the day of the coronation!
Finally—She was going to be living her dream life.
"Walk faster!" One of them snapped at her, kicking her legs and urging her to increase her steps.
"You're such a weakling! I won't be surprised when you get jilted by your mate!" The second said and they all laughed.
Penny fought the great ounce not to cry on her spot, and slowly she walked. Those words made no meaning to her anymore. This wouldn't be the first time, and wouldn't be the least... Obviously.
Seeing the sky again, Penny ignored her problems, and splayed her hands in the air, taking in a slow breath as ecstasy brimmed in her.
When she had returned home that day, she became happier knowing about her mother's and father's absence, including her annoying brother.
Delilah, her father's wife and her never got along. Her father had been blinded by her (Delilah) love and how selfish she was.
Tonight was the night of her mate's coronation. Penny was happy she'd gradually be moved into the royal's. No one would see her as a weakling again or address her as a weakling. What could be better than that?
Seeing the leftovers from what looked sauce and rice, Penny ate till full before taking a long bath. After getting cleaned up, she dozed off.
*
A knock on the door jolted her back to reality. "Who's there?" She asked but no voice came, only the repetition of the sounds from the door.
"Who's there?"
No response. Sluggishly, Penny sauntered to the door —To her uttermost surprise, Kian stood at her doorstep. His eyes void of emotions as he stared down at her.
"Kian," Penny's eyes glistened, and without a second thought, she embraced him, taking in his familiar leather scent. For the first time, she precipitously felt weird seeing he wasn't reciprocating her embrace.
"Kian," She whispered, yet again.
"Penny... I need you." His eyes flashed their mating bond colour, and Penny gulped, deciphering what he wanted. Before she could blink, he bared his teeth and drove into her nape. That day, Penny succumbed to him, giving him everything she could offer because she was his, and so...was he.
*
Throughout the rest of the day, Penny kept being ignored by her mate whenever she had tried to approach him. What she couldn't understand was why he was suddenly acting strange, and distancing himself from her.
Penny thought he was feigning and was only pretending just to see her reaction, so she made up her mind and went to the coronation ground that night.
Everywhere littered with lots of people from the pack. Being the non-social type, she hid in the corners, admiring Kian was dressed on the stage.
"Hail to the newest Alpha!" The elders said.
"Hail!"
"As you all know, the hour has come for our dearest Alpha to pick his choose mate before us."
Her stomach knotted with excitement. Right on her spot, Penny started to arrange her hair and dress, making sure she was good to go before Kian would call her but then...
"I, Kian Nathan of Crescent Moon pack accept Rachel Wayne as my mate, and Luna."
Not once, not twice did Penny's heart skipped as an eerie silence surrounded her.
