Chapter Eight Elemental SchoolThe next morning Mai heard voices outside in the main living room. She dressed quickly and when she walked out she was met by two young girls, who looked exactly alike, standing by the open door. The both bowed their heads towards Mai.
‘We brought you breakfast,’ they said in unison, and then giggled at each other.
Mai smiled. ‘Thank you.’
One girl looked eager to say something, while the other frowned as if to discourage her.
In a whisper, the first girl said, ‘Something happened here last night.’ Her lookalike elbowed her, but she continued. ‘A beast came into the city. All the soldiers tried to capture it, but it got away.’
‘Does this happen often?’ Mai asked.
‘It’s never happened before,’ the other girl said. ‘Some of the city dwellers are blaming—’
