"Bianca! Hurry up your uncle is here," mama shouted with excitement. "Coming," I answered admiring the girl in the mirror. Her button down blouse and well ironed skirt fitted her petite light skin body very perfectly. I could not help but stare.
"Oh my God you look stunning!" Uncle Joe gushed as i walked down the stairs in a slow motion. "You father could have given everything to see this day," he added before giving me a long protective hug.
"Mama!" I lamented noticing her watery eyes. "I will miss you so much baby," she murmured showering me with kisses and a warm hug. "Two hundred miles is too much," that was Molly my sister constantly sniffing like she was resisting tears.
"Remember everything we have told you, be careful with campus boys, party in moderation, focus on your books and just make good decisions, OK Bee? I don't want you to end up like me," Molly emphasized. I knew all that. I had my priorities straight and I had no time to full around with boys. I knew that my family was depending on my success. I had to make them proud.
The ride to Nairobi was so long and hectic. Molly and I sat at the back seats, mama at the front while uncle Joe drove. I dozed off like two or three times before we finally got there.
My rental apartment was small but cute. I did not mind that it was old and in a pretty bad condition. I appreciated it as it was what we could afford at that time. I had already bought everything I needed for the house. Mama and Molly helped me put it in order then they left. I was left lonely and hoping to make friends very soon. It was however exciting that the student's orientation was the next day, I needed to meet people already.
My house was not that far from school but I had to take a taxi on my first day there. I needed to be familiar with the place before i was comfortable walking alone on the streets.
I left my house very early and stood along the road waiting for a taxi. I was not alone, there were a few more people who I am pretty sure were freshmen. A taxi pulled up next to me a few minutes later. "Hey, where to?"the taxi driver asked, his voice utterly captivating. "UON school gate,"I answered. I couldn't help but notice his sexy chocolate brown blazing eyes gazing at me. He was bald headed with a well groomed thick beard. I found his appearance very attractive. I really did. He then gave me a gesture to get in.
"You are a freshman right?" He asked observing me in the rear-view mirror. "Y-yeah," I stammered. I mean, who would not be nervous talking to such a handsome guy. "I am Victor by the way," he declared. "I am Bianca,"I said. He was surprisingly very charming, a trait that is rare in guys as fine as him.
He engaged me in a conversation which was mostly about life in campus and himself of course . He dropped out at his second year in law school because he could no longer be able to pay for his fees. His parents died while he was young making his childhood a struggle.
"After all that chat I bet you can't let me go without your phone number, right?" He roared with a cheeky smile on his face. Oh my God he also likes me, I was more than excited. "Sorry, I can't give it to you today," I played hard to got. Deep down I really wanted him to call me or at least text me but it was my first day there. How could I start giving guys my number. That is totally against my principles. I then got out of the car and walked towards the school. I could feel him starring at me as I walked away, making me uncomfortable but also feeling myself.
UON is so huge and magnificent. I could not believe it. The buildings were so beautiful to look at. The school auditorium was where the orientation was taking place. I made my way there took a seat and waited for the event to start.
"Hey, I am Lucy Barnett," the girl seated next to me broke the silence. She looked a little familiar. It was the girl living next to my apartment. I had seen her the previous day but we were both very shy to say hi. "Nice to meet you Lucy, I am Bianca Jones," I introduced myself . "Which course are you taking?" I added. "Medicine," she answered. "Wow! Me too." I gushed. I was thrilled to bits to meet Lucy. She also could not hide her enthusiasm. Lucy was so friendly and easy to talk to. We ended up walking back to our apartments together. Cooked dinner together and that is how I met my best friend.
Lucy is quite tall, almost the same height as me. She is also light skinned with very dark hair and a petite body. People always asked us if we are sisters. We lied sometimes. I like her because she is always in a good mood. Every time I look at her she has a wide beautiful smile on her face. We went to class together, studied together, ate together, partied together, went to the movies together and had so much fun together. You could not spot any of us alone without the other. Lucy made my campus life very interesting.
