Chapter 2:
Emily stood in front of the tiny mirror hanging crookedly on the wall, smoothing down the simple emerald-green dress her neighbor, Mrs. Wilson, had insisted she borrow.
“It looks like it was made for you,” the elderly woman said with a warm smile.
Emily laughed nervously.
“I’ve never been to a place like this.”
Mrs. Wilson gently tucked a loose strand of Emily’s chestnut hair behind her ear.
“Maybe that’s exactly why you should go.”
Emily looked at her reflection one last time.
The dress wasn’t expensive.
Neither were the heels that pinched her feet.
But for the first time in years…
She felt beautiful.
⸻
Meanwhile…
Across town, the luxurious Winters Hotel sparkled like something out of a Christmas movie.
Crystal chandeliers illuminated the grand lobby while a magnificent Christmas tree towered over elegantly dressed guests.
Champagne flowed.
Laughter echoed.
Photographers crowded the entrance.
“Mr. Hunter! Over here!”
“Zach! One picture!”
Zach Hunter stepped out of his sleek black Rolls-Royce without sparing the cameras a glance.
His perfectly tailored black tuxedo hugged his broad frame, and his icy blue eyes carried the same emotionless expression that had earned him the nickname The Cold Billionaire.
His assistant, Ethan, hurried after him.
“You could at least smile.”
“I already did.”
“You blinked.”
“Close enough.”
Ethan sighed dramatically.
“You know every woman in this room is staring at you.”
“They’ll survive.”
⸻
Emily arrived fifteen minutes later.
The moment she stepped through the revolving doors, she froze.
Everything looked…
Unreal.
Golden lights wrapped around every pillar.
A violin quartet played soft Christmas melodies.
Women wore dazzling designer gowns.
Men looked like they had stepped off magazine covers.
Emily instinctively looked down at her borrowed dress.
Maybe this had been a mistake.
A hostess approached with a welcoming smile.
“Good evening. Your invitation?”
Emily handed over the black envelope with trembling fingers.
The hostess scanned it.
“Welcome, Miss Adams.”
Emily blinked.
She actually belongs here?
⸻
Inside the ballroom…
Zach endured another boring conversation with wealthy investors.
“So, Hunter, have you finally decided to settle down?”
“No.”
“But you’re almost thirty.”
“I know how birthdays work.”
The older businessman chuckled awkwardly.
Zach’s attention wandered across the room.
Until…
Everything stopped.
Standing near the dessert table was the most breathtaking woman he had ever seen.
She wasn’t laughing loudly like everyone else.
She wasn’t trying to get anyone’s attention.
She simply stood there, quietly admiring the enormous Christmas tree.
Something about her felt…
Different.
Real.
“Who is she?” he asked.
Ethan followed his gaze.
“No idea.”
Zach couldn’t explain why.
But for the first time in years…
He wanted to know.
⸻
Emily stared at the buffet in disbelief.
She had never seen so much food.
Tiny cakes.
Chocolate fountains.
Roasted turkey.
Seafood.
It looked like enough food to feed her entire neighborhood.
She quietly picked up one small pastry.
“First time?”
Emily nearly dropped it.
She turned around.
Standing beside her was the most handsome man she had ever seen.
Tall.
Dark hair.
Sharp jawline.
Piercing blue eyes.
His tuxedo screamed wealth.
Everything about him screamed wealth.
“I…”
She smiled awkwardly.
“Is it that obvious?”
His lips twitched.
“A little.”
Emily laughed softly.
“I’ve never seen food this fancy before.”
Instead of mocking her…
He smiled.
“Amazing, isn’t it?”
She nodded.
“My sister would love this.”
“You came with your sister?”
Emily’s smile faded.
“No.”
“She’s in the hospital.”
Something shifted in Zach’s expression.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily quickly forced another smile.
“It’s okay.”
An awkward silence followed.
Finally…
“I’m Emily.”
“Zach.”
Neither of them mentioned their last names.
For a few moments…
They were simply two strangers talking beside a Christmas tree.
⸻
Across the ballroom…
A woman in a stunning red gown watched them closely.
Vanessa Carter.
A famous socialite.
Beautiful.
Wealthy.
And absolutely obsessed with Zach Hunter.
She clenched her champagne glass.
“Who is she?”
One of her friends shrugged.
“No idea.”
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“No one steals my spotlight.”
⸻
Back near the Christmas tree…
Emily laughed at one of Zach’s sarcastic jokes.
“You don’t smile much, do you?” she teased.
“I smile.”
“When?”
He pretended to think.
“Once in 2024.”
She burst into laughter.
It was genuine.
Unforced.
Beautiful.
Zach found himself smiling too.
Actually smiling.
Ethan nearly choked on his drink from across the room.
“Did he just…”
He rubbed his eyes.
“No way.”
⸻
The host stepped onto the stage.
“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the annual Winters Hotel Christmas Charity Gala!”
Applause filled the ballroom.
“As always, tonight’s donations will go toward helping families with children battling cancer.”
Emily’s heart skipped.
Cancer.
Lily.
Maybe…
Just maybe…
This was why she had been invited.
The announcer continued.
“We’ll now begin accepting applications from families in need.”
Emily felt tears sting her eyes.
This was her chance.
The chance she’d been praying for.
⸻
As guests moved toward the registration tables, Vanessa intercepted Emily.
“Excuse me.”
Emily turned politely.
“Yes?”
Vanessa looked her up and down.
Her smile wasn’t kind.
“It takes a lot of confidence to show up wearing…that.”
Emily looked down at her dress.
“I know it’s simple.”
“Oh, sweetheart.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Simple isn’t the word I’d use.”
Emily’s cheeks burned.
“I should go.”
Vanessa stepped in front of her.
“People like you should remember where they belong.”
Before Emily could answer…
A deep voice interrupted.
“She’s exactly where she belongs.”
Vanessa froze.
“So are you going to apologize,” Zach said calmly, “or should I ask security to escort you out?”
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
“You’d embarrass me over her?”
“I’d remove anyone who bullies my guests.”
Without another word, Vanessa stormed away, humiliated.
Emily stared at Zach.
“You didn’t have to do that.”
“Yes, I did.”
“No one’s ever stood up for me before.”
Their eyes met.
For just a second…
The crowded ballroom disappeared.
⸻
Then suddenly—
A loud crash echoed through the hall.
Everyone turned toward the entrance.
A frightened nurse rushed inside, still wearing her scrubs.
“Emily Adams!”
Emily’s heart dropped.
The nurse’s eyes searched the room desperately.
“Where’s Emily Adams?”
Emily stepped forward.
“I’m Emily.”
The nurse was out of breath.
“You need to come with me.”
Emily’s hands began to shake.
“Is it Lily?”
The nurse swallowed hard.
“Your sister collapsed again.”
“The doctors say…”
Emily felt the room spin.
“…you need to get to the hospital immediately.”
The ballroom fell silent.
Emily’s invitation slipped from her trembling fingers.
And for the first time that night…
Zach Hunter saw tears stream down the face of the woman he couldn’t stop thinking about.
