Chapter 3:
Emily didn’t remember leaving the ballroom.
One moment she was standing beneath the glittering chandeliers…
The next, she was running through the hotel lobby, tears blurring her vision.
“Lily…”
Please be okay.
Please…
She reached the hotel entrance just as a cold gust of wind swept across the street.
She frantically searched for a taxi.
Nothing.
Not one.
“Oh God…” she whispered.
She looked at her phone.
Balance: $7.43
It wasn’t enough.
Not tonight.
Not with the Christmas Eve rush.
She covered her face and broke down.
“I just need to get to my sister…”
⸻
“Emily.”
She turned.
Zach stood a few feet away, his tuxedo jacket draped over one arm.
“You’ll never get a cab tonight.”
“I’ll find one.”
“You won’t.”
“I have to.”
“I know.”
She wiped her tears away.
“I don’t need pity.”
His expression softened.
“It’s not pity.”
“It’s concern.”
Before she could protest again, he looked toward the valet.
“Bring my car around.”
Within seconds, a sleek black Rolls-Royce pulled up to the entrance.
Emily stared at it.
“I can’t…”
“You can.”
“I don’t even know you.”
He opened the passenger door.
“Then let me introduce myself properly.”
He held out his hand.
“I’m Zach Hunter.”
Emily froze.
Hunter…
As in…
The Zach Hunter?
The billionaire owner of Winters Hotel.
The man whose face appeared in magazines every month.
The man everyone in Texas knew.
She looked back at him in disbelief.
“You’re…”
“The billionaire?”
He sighed.
“Unfortunately.”
Despite everything, Emily let out a tiny laugh.
⸻
The drive to the hospital was silent.
Christmas lights reflected off the windows as snow continued to fall outside.
Emily twisted her fingers nervously.
“I ruined your party.”
“It wasn’t my party.”
“You own the hotel.”
“I still didn’t enjoy it.”
She glanced at him.
“Why?”
He stared at the road ahead.
“Because people like pretending.”
“Pretending?”
“They pretend to like me.”
“They pretend to care.”
“They pretend money makes everything perfect.”
Emily didn’t know what to say.
“So…”
He asked quietly.
“Tell me about Lily.”
Emily smiled sadly.
“She’s sixteen.”
“She loves Christmas.”
“She still believes Santa exists.”
Zach smiled.
“Seriously?”
Emily nodded.
“I never had the heart to tell her.”
“What about your dad?”
Her smile disappeared.
“He died five years ago.”
“I’m sorry.”
She shrugged.
“You get used to pain.”
Zach looked at her.
“No.”
“You just learn to hide it.”
For the first time…
Someone understood.
⸻
Twenty minutes later…
The car stopped outside St. Mary’s Hospital.
Emily rushed inside.
“Miss Adams!”
Dr. Harrison met her near the emergency ward.
“How is she?”
The doctor’s face was serious.
“We managed to stabilize her.”
Emily let out a shaky breath.
“But…”
Her heart sank.
“…she needs surgery.”
“How much?”
The doctor hesitated.
“Three hundred thousand dollars.”
Emily felt like the ground disappeared beneath her feet.
Three hundred thousand.
She couldn’t even afford three thousand.
“I…”
“I’m sorry.”
“We’ve done everything we can.”
“If the surgery isn’t scheduled soon…”
He didn’t finish the sentence.
He didn’t have to.
⸻
Emily slowly walked into Lily’s room.
Machines beeped quietly.
Her little sister looked so pale.
Too pale.
Lily smiled weakly.
“You came.”
Emily forced herself to smile back.
“Of course I came.”
“I told Mom not to cry.”
Emily sat beside the bed and took her hand.
“You’ll be okay.”
Lily looked at her with innocent eyes.
“That’s a lie.”
Emily’s heart shattered.
“You promised we would decorate the Christmas tree together.”
“We still will.”
“Even if it’s late.”
Lily squeezed her sister’s hand.
“I don’t want to die, Emmy.”
Emily finally broke.
She rested her forehead against Lily’s hand and sobbed.
“I won’t let that happen.”
“I promise.”
⸻
Outside the room…
Zach stood quietly in the hallway.
He had heard everything.
Every word.
Every tear.
His chest tightened.
He remembered another hospital.
Another Christmas.
Another promise.
One he had failed to keep.
He closed his eyes.
Not again.
Never again.
⸻
His phone rang.
“Ethan.”
“Where are you?”
“The hospital.”
“Why?”
“I’m helping someone.”
Silence.
Then…
“The board members are asking where you are.”
“I don’t care.”
“Your investors—”
“I said I don’t care.”
Ethan blinked.
This wasn’t the Zach Hunter he knew.
⸻
The next morning…
Emily sat alone in the hospital cafeteria with a cup of untouched coffee.
She had spent the entire night awake.
How was she supposed to find three hundred thousand dollars?
Sell the apartment?
It wasn’t worth half that.
Take another job?
There wasn’t enough time.
Borrow it?
From who?
“You skipped breakfast.”
She looked up.
Zach placed a warm cup of hot chocolate and a sandwich in front of her.
“I wasn’t hungry.”
“That’s a lie.”
She smiled faintly.
“You’ve known me less than a day.”
“And I already know when you’re lying.”
She looked away.
“I don’t know what to do.”
“You’ll find a way.”
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“I won’t.”
“I’ve tried everything.”
“I’ve prayed.”
“I’ve begged.”
“I’ve worked two jobs.”
“And it’s still not enough.”
Zach watched her in silence.
Then he asked the question that changed everything.
“How much?”
Emily shook her head.
“You don’t have to—”
“How much?”
She swallowed hard.
“Three hundred thousand dollars.”
Without hesitation…
Zach reached into his suit pocket, pulled out his checkbook, and began writing.
Emily stared at him in confusion.
“What are you doing?”
He tore out the check and placed it gently on the table.
“$300,000.”
Emily looked down.
Then back at him.
Then back at the check.
Her breathing stopped.
“I can’t accept this.”
“It’s not a loan.”
“No.”
She pushed it back toward him.
“I don’t want charity.”
“It’s not charity.”
“Then what is it?”
Zach looked directly into her eyes.
“It’s a Christmas gift.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Why?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked out the cafeteria window, where snowflakes drifted gently to the ground.
Finally, he spoke.
“Because once…”
“…someone I loved needed help.”
“And I was too late.”
A silence settled between them.
Emily could see the pain in his eyes.
A pain that money hadn’t erased.
She slowly picked up the check, her hands trembling.
“I don’t know how to thank you.”
“You don’t have to.”
Neither of them noticed…
Standing just outside the cafeteria…
Vanessa Carter had witnessed the entire exchange.
Her lips curled into a cold smile.
“So that’s the game…”
She pulled out her phone.
“If I can’t have Zach…”
“Then I’ll make sure she loses him.”
