HUSH. Episode 5

The California sky wore a blanket of soft gray clouds, muting the usual golden sunshine into a gentle silver glow. A cool breeze drifted through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my private residence, carrying the scent of rain that hadn’t yet fallen. The morning was quiet—too quiet. It was the kind of silence that made every unanswered thought feel louder. I stood by the window with my phone pressed against my ear, my fingers tapping impatiently against the glass as the call continued to ring. Come on, Rebecca… pick up. No answer. I pulled the phone away, stared at the screen for a brief second, then dialed her number again. Straight to voicemail. A small sigh escaped my lips. Rebecca never ignored my calls, especially not this moment when a huge scandal is going on . Something about the silence settling between us made an uneasy feeling coil in the pit of my stomach. Maybe she was still asleep… or maybe she was simply busy. I wanted to believe it was something that simple. Outside, the towering palm trees swayed beneath the cloudy California sky while the city slowly stirred awake. Inside my home, however, the air felt strangely heavy, as if the morning itself was trying to warn me that today would be anything but ordinary. The cool California morning wrapped the quiet little town in a refreshing chill as soft clouds drifted lazily across the sky. Outside, the streets had already come alive. Neighbors exchanged cheerful greetings over white picket fences, children chased one another down the sidewalks, and the sound of laughter blended with the distant rumble of passing cars. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and homemade breakfast floated through the crisp air, making the town feel warm despite the lingering cold. Inside the cozy house, however, the morning was anything but idle. The rhythmic scrape of a broom against the wooden floor mixed with the gentle clatter of dishes and the occasional creak of old furniture being moved. Dust danced in the pale sunlight filtering through the windows as everyone worked together. The elderly lady hummed an old tune while carefully wiping down the shelves, her weathered hands moving with practiced ease. Nearby, my gaze occasionally wandered toward him as he effortlessly carried a heavy wooden cabinet across the room, his calm expression unchanged despite the demanding task. Every movement he made was steady, almost effortless, revealing a quiet strength that was impossible to ignore. I busied myself dusting the bookshelves and folding freshly washed linens, stealing glances whenever I thought he wasn’t looking. For a fleeting moment, our eyes met before we both looked away, pretending to be far more interested in our chores than in each other. The little house echoed with the comforting sounds of teamwork, soft conversation, and shared laughter. Beyond its walls, the town carried on with another peaceful morning, unaware that within this humble home, three people—each carrying burdens of their own—were slowly weaving together a bond that neither time nor circumstance could easily break. “ who care for a glass of juice ?” I asked, trying to clear the tense air,the old lady shook her head while Damian chuckles,I almost asked for the ground to swallow me up I continue with what I was doing . The scent of freshly cleaned wood lingered in the air as I wiped the dust from the old bookshelf, pretending my attention was fixed on the task before me. It wasn’t. My eyes found her again. Rachel moved gracefully through the little house, a folded cloth in one hand as she dusted the windowsill. A few loose strands of hair escaped to frame her face, swaying gently whenever she tucked them behind her ear. The cool morning light spilling through the windows painted a soft glow across her features, making her look far more beautiful than I cared to admit. She looked peaceful. For the first time since we’d met, there was no fear in her eyes, no guarded expression, only quiet concentration as she helped around the house. Without realizing it, the corners of my lips lifted into the faintest smile. Then… Her phone rang. The cheerful atmosphere vanished the moment she glanced at the screen. The smile faded from her face, replaced by an expression I couldn’t quite read. She hesitated for a heartbeat before answering, and as she listened, the warmth in her eyes slowly disappeared. Her shoulders stiffened, her fingers tightened around the phone, and the color drained from her face. Whoever was on the other end had stolen the light from her eyes in mere seconds. A sharp wave of irritation surged through me. I didn’t know who had called. I didn’t know what had been said. But I knew one thing—I already disliked them. Without thinking, I took a step toward her, my jaw tightening as countless unpleasant possibilities crossed my mind. If someone had hurt her… A firm stare stopped me. I turned to find the elderly woman watching me from across the room. She didn’t say a word. She simply met my eyes with a calm but knowing look, one that quietly reminded me to stay where I was. I exhaled slowly, unclenching my fists before anyone noticed. She was right. Rebecca needed space more than she needed my anger. So I returned to cleaning, though my eyes never strayed far from her, silently waiting… hoping that whatever burden had suddenly found its way to her heart, she wouldn’t have to carry it alone. “Are you okay ?”,I asked her immediately she dropped the phone, she looked at me and faked a smile at me “Just some random call “ “And it changed your mood?”,i continued even tho I felt like stopping myself from asking “Son,let her breathe, maybe it’s a random call” The old lady interfered, thanks to her maybe she would have known who exactly I am,I cleared my throat and went back to working, but Isnt she suppose to dispose her phone what if someone trailed her,I turned back to look at her and saw her taking a card from the phone and tossing it out through the window and tried bending the phone into half,I reached out and grabbed the phone from her,and a loud thud, came from underneath my shoe,I crushed the phone, she should get a new one,she looked at me and I saw her cheeks turned rosy I chuckled and walk across the room to the fireplace . Who would believed I,Damian Raymond ,would go this soft like no one would The morning breeze drifted gently through the balcony, carrying the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee and buttered toast. Below, the quiet California street had already begun to wake. Neighbors greeted one another with cheerful smiles, children chased each other along the sidewalk, and the distant hum of passing cars blended with birdsong. The three of them sat around a small wooden dining table on the balcony, enjoying a simple yet delicious breakfast. Warm pancakes drizzled with maple syrup, scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, fresh fruit, and steaming mugs of coffee filled the table. The elderly lady smiled fondly as she watched the younger pair. “You both eat like you’ve been starving for days,” she teased, chuckling softly. The female lead laughed, taking another bite of her pancake. “It’s too good to stop.” The male lead simply smiled, shaking his head before reaching for his coffee. For the first time in what felt like forever, the morning was peaceful. Then— Buzz. His phone vibrated against the wooden table. The sound was subtle, yet enough to catch his attention. He lowered his eyes to the screen. A single message. His relaxed expression faded almost imperceptibly. Without opening it immediately, he quietly placed his coffee cup down. “Excuse me for a moment,” he said politely. The elderly lady nodded with a warm smile. “Go ahead.” Rebecca glanced at him for only a second before returning to her breakfast. He slipped his phone into his hand and walked away from the table, moving toward the far end of the balcony where the morning chatter from the street became little more than distant noise. Stopping beside the railing, he unlocked his phone and opened the message. The calm look on his face slowly disappeared. His jaw tightened ever so slightly as his eyes scanned the words on the screen. The peaceful breakfast suddenly felt much farther away.
