My eyes flung open as I found myself in the middle of the forest. In the midnight sky, I could see the full moon shining brightly, its glow casting an eerie feeling over the dense forest. The occasional rustling of leaves and the sound of dry twigs snapping echoed through the silence. Cold shivers ran down my spine as I started to walk into the dark, foreboding forest.
As I walked on, a piercing howl rang through the forest, causing a flock of birds to take flight from their perch in the trees, causing my heart to race and my mind to reel with fear.
Where was I walking to? I didn’t know. But something kept pulling me forward. Tonight I had just turned eighteen, and before my mother abandoned me in the BloodMoon pack, she had revealed something to me—something that didn’t make sense to a thirteen-year-old.
On the night when you turn eighteen, you will find yourself and the answers to why I am leaving you behind.
To me, it felt like an excuse—an excuse for her to feel less guilty about leaving me behind and running off.
But tonight, however, an uneasiness stirred within me. I couldn’t shake that feeling that something was about to happen and that it would change my whole existence.
As I walked, strange shapes and figures seemed to lurk around, like something was watching me and waiting to pounce on me. The rustling of leaves and snapping of twigs becomes a faint whisper. I don’t know why I was here; no one would want to be caught in the forest on such a night. The forest holds unknown horrors—a place where the darkness could swallow you whole and leave nothing but an empty shell behind.
My eyes landed on a tree, and as the moon cast its eerie light on it, pulling me closer, the tree seemed familiar—quite too familiar to be ignored. I started to walk towards it.
A rustling sound made me halt in my tracks. My heart pounded as I turned around; a low growl resounded from the tree in front of me. Suddenly, a figure burst through the trees, making its way towards me.
My eyes widened in realization as I recognized the wolf. The fur was matted and dirty, and the eyes glowed a menacing red. As it’s Razor-like teeth growled at me.
Rogue. It’s a rogue werewolf. The wolf snared and bared its teeth as the previously fresh air of the forest now smelled strongly of bloodlust. Thick saliva dropped slowly out of its mouth as it crouched low, taking an attacking stance.
I too took a fighting stance. I was born as a weak omega, but after being bullied for so long, I learned to fight for myself. No one was coming to save me anyway; the wolf lunged at me, and as we collided, its strength was visibly a lot greater than mine.
The wolf turned and began its usual snarling again, and as I looked for any point that appeared weak I could attack from, I lunged at it this time, furiously grabbing its forelegs as I flung it to the ground. It grabbed my legs too, pulling me down to the ground. Claws clashed with each other as we engaged in a fierce battle over who would retreat.
I snuck my teeth into its right leg as it growled loudly in pain. Before kicking me off its body, as I tried to regain my composure, it charged towards me and flung me to the other side. I whimpered as pain shot through my shoulders.
The rouge wolf wasn’t backing down as it growled at me. My body had grown weak, and I knew if it charged towards me again, I might not leave this forest alive.
I halted back as the wolf launched towards me and then towards the tree, then turned and faced me before howling at me.
My instincts warned me that this battle was not just a mere confrontation; something was causing that wolf to attack me. Its eyes looked like they were fighting to protect something I didn’t seem to know about. Something had possessed the rogue wolf to attack me.
Rogues weren't much in the Bloodmoon pack; rogues were despised here; they were considered an abomination. So the few rogues here don't walk alone; they walk around in packs, but this rogue had attacked me on its own; it had targeted me for a reason.
Raven!
I turned around to see who was calling my name, and when I turned back, the wolf had retreated, disappearing into the shadows.
The fight with the rogue left a sour taste in my mouth; it felt like there was more to it. There was something more to the incident that just occurred.
A few torchlights were shining around in the forest as footsteps pounded against the floor towards me. A sharp smell of musk hit my ears, the scent too familiar to ignore. I turned towards the tree one last time. A strong energy kept pulling me towards it, but instead of going towards it again, I turned my heads away and started to run in the direction I had heard my name.
Raven! I heard my name again, and I decided to answer. How could I not recognize the scent? My uncle, as usual, had come to find me in the forest.
“Uncle Sebastian, I am here. I replied slowly.
“Are you okay?” His face comes into view, and as usual, his eyes are filled with worry.
“Yes, I am completely fine. You don’t need to come find me all the time, uncle; I can find my way home.” I said as I finally felt safe and my tensed muscles relaxed.
“We heard the howl," he began slowly. I wondered how loud the rogue had howled for it to have reached them.
“You heard the howl from here? I asked again to be sure.
“Yes, Raven, you called us here.
Me?
………..
The walk back home was quiet, as several questions ran through my head. I couldn’t recall howling at any point in the fight with the rogue; how could they hear me howl when I didn’t howl?
My uncle couldn’t have lied to me, as he is a very serious man. I can’t seem to read the expression on his face, as he had a stern look, a look that only appears on his face when he has several thoughts going through his mind.
Uncle Sebastian had taken me in after my mother had run off, leaving me behind. His wife Kate had been nice to me, but recently, her behavior has slowly started changing as she shouts at me, and the look in her eyes seems to indicate she wants me gone. Maybe it’s because I have been stressing her husband a lot these past few months. This year has been quite rough for us, as I always end up in the forest walking about till they come find me. But this time around, something was different. I was attacked by a rogue, and I had just turned eighteen.
Why was I attacked on my birthday? Am I going to keep getting attacked? Who is the rogue wolf that attacked me? Questions upon questions filled my thoughts.
We finally got home, and Kate was outside the house; she was pacing around.
“What happened? She asked quickly as her eyes landed on us.
“She was attacked by a rogue. But we came just in time.” My uncle replied her. My eyes widened in shock. How did he know I was attacked by a rogue? I didn’t tell him that.
“Are you okay, Raven?” She asked me.
“I am fine.” I quickly reassured her.
“Raven, go inside; we will join you soon. My uncle said slowly.
“Okay. I replied, as I walked into the house, but something in me told me to stay behind the door and eavesdrop on them. And I did just that.
“I knew it! I knew this would happen; that’s why I told you not to take her in. My aunt started, and my heart was beating against my chest as I wondered if I had made the right choice by eavesdropping on them.
“She is eighteen now! What are we going to do, as they will keep coming for her? Kate's voice broke, and I wondered what they were talking about.
“We’ll go see the Alpha tomorrow morning. My uncle finally said.
The Alpha? My heart pounded against my chest at the thought of Alpha Dean.
Alpha Dean is the most fearful man in the whole of the werewolf pack; everyone knows he is ruthless and cruel.
What connection do I have with Alpha Dean?
