Chapter 5: Awakening

1062 Words
Seren's POV I wake up to white ceiling tiles and the smell of antiseptic. The medical wing. Again. My body feels like I've been hit by a truck, every muscle screaming in protest when I try to sit up. Memories flood back in broken pieces. The forest. The rogue. Fighting like my body knew exactly what to do even though I've never been trained. The power. Oh god, the power. It erupted from somewhere deep inside me, a force I didn't know existed. For one perfect, terrifying moment, I felt invincible. Like I could command the world to kneel and it would obey. Then nothing. "You're awake." I turn my head too fast, pain shooting through my neck. Kade sits in a chair beside my bed, looking like he hasn't slept. His clothes are dirty, torn in places, and his amber eyes watch me with an intensity that makes my skin prickle. "What are you doing here?" My voice comes out hoarse. "Waiting." "For what?" He doesn't answer immediately. His jaw clenches, unclenches, like he's fighting with himself over something. The silence stretches between us, uncomfortable and strange. Finally, he speaks. "What are you?" The question hits me like a slap. "I'm a Surrogate Beta. You've made sure I never forget it." "No." He leans forward, his eyes burning into mine. "Surrogates don't take down rogues. They don't move like you moved. They don't have power like what you showed in that clearing." "I don't know what you're talking about." "Don't lie to me." Anger flares hot in my chest. "I'm not lying. I don't know what happened. I've never done anything like that before." "Bullshit." "It's the truth!" I'm sitting up now despite the pain, my hands clenched in the thin hospital blanket. "You think I've been hiding some secret power for three years? You think I let you humiliate me over and over when I could have fought back?" The words hang between us, sharp and accusing. Kade flinches slightly, the first crack in his usual arrogant mask. "Why didn't you run?" he asks quietly. "What?" "In the forest. When the rogue attacked. Why didn't you run and hide like Surrogates are supposed to?" I don't have a good answer. The truth is, I don't know why I fought. Instinct took over, something deeper than thought or training. My wolf surged forward, and for the first time in my life, she felt strong. Real. Like she'd been caged and suddenly remembered she had teeth. "I couldn't let it hurt them," I say finally. "Marcus and Vera. They're not my friends, but they're still packed. Still students. I couldn't just watch them die." Kade stares at me like I'm speaking a foreign language. "You risked your life for wolves who would never do the same for you." "Maybe that makes me stupid." "Maybe it makes you something else entirely." Before I can ask what he means, the door opens. Professor Thane enters, his silver hair catching the fluorescent light. His eyes land on me, and something flickers across his face. Relief, maybe. Or recognition. "Miss Ashfall," he says warmly. "I'm glad to see you awake. How do you feel?" "Like I got trampled by a herd of Alphas." "Not far from the truth, given what I've heard." He turns to Kade. "Mr. Ravaryn, if you wouldn't mind giving us a moment?" Kade stands slowly, his eyes never leaving my face. The intensity in his gaze makes my stomach flip uncomfortably. Something has changed between us, shifted in ways I don't understand. "We're not done talking," he says. It sounds like a promise and a threat all at once. He leaves, the door closing softly behind him. Thane waits a few seconds, then waves his hand. I feel a subtle shift in the air, a tingle across my skin. "Privacy ward," he explains. "What we discuss stays between us." My heart starts racing. "Professor, what's happening to me?" "You're waking up." He pulls the chair closer, sitting with a heavy sigh. "Tell me, Seren, what do you remember about your life before the academy?" "Not much. My parents died when I was young. I lived with different foster families until I was old enough to be placed here." "And your memories of your parents? Your early childhood?" I try to think back, but there's only fog and fragments. A woman's laugh. The smell of wildflowers. Singing in a language I don't recognize. Nothing concrete, nothing real. "It's blurry," I admit. "I always thought that was normal. Trauma, maybe. From losing them." "Or something else." Thane leans forward. "Seren, what I'm about to tell you will sound impossible. But after tonight, after what you did in that forest, I think you're ready to hear the truth." My hands start trembling. "What truth?" "You're not a Surrogate Beta. You never were." His silver eyes hold mine. "You're a Prime. The last surviving member of the Ashfall bloodline." The words don't make sense. Primes are extinct, wiped out in the Bloodline Wars he taught us about. They're history, stories, cautionary tales about what happens when wolves grow too powerful. They're not real. They can't be real. "That's impossible," I whisper. "Is it? After what you did tonight? After you commanded a rogue to submit without even shifting?" Thane's voice is gentle but firm. "Your power was sealed when you were five years old. Your memories were altered. You were placed in the academy under a false designation to hide you from those who would kill you if they knew what you truly are." My mind reels, trying to process information that feels too big to contain. "Why? Why would someone do that?" "To protect you. Your grandmother, Elara Ashfall, was my friend. When the purges began, she knew her family was targeted. She managed to save you, but only by erasing every trace of who you were." His expression darkens. "She died making sure you survived." Tears burn behind my eyes. A grandmother I never knew, sacrificing everything for a granddaughter who wouldn't even remember her name. "The seal is breaking," Thane continues. "That's why your power manifested tonight. You're coming into your full abilities, and when that seal shatters completely, every Alpha in the territory will feel it." "What happens then?" "That depends on you. On whether you're strong enough to face what's coming."
