LESLIE ABRAMSON:
the relatives of the menendez family wanted the bestest lawyers to take this case as they still had a reputation to uphold .
Leslie Abramson came ahead and was known as the district's best female attorney, She had won many cases and was confident in taking this one but like every other case and defendants there did come challenges. Over the time she had only been the attorney for Erik menendez and grew close to the boy , she showed sympathy and affection to the young boy she earned Erik menendez's trust and till this day has kept it. Leslie is the mother that erik never had. she was so set on the freedom and lives of the brothers that her wording is:
"I want to see him walk down the streets, not in chains, not in shackles and not with a deputy sheriff standing next to him."
this explains more than enough that Leslie saw something beautiful in these brothers something they took to much time realizing.
During the time she was defending this case she was a mother herself and looked at erik as his own child. She genuinely cared for the boys and their well being . She talked to Erik for hours and IT WAS TO LESLIE THAT ERIK HAD CONFIRMED THAT HE KILLED THEIR PARENTS BUT WHAT WAS THE REASON? HE TOLD LESLIE ALL OF IT EVEN THOUGH LYLE HAD TOLD ERIK NOT TO.
During the time Erik amd Lyle spent together in the jail . Lyle had once written a letter to Erik which he gave instructions to dispose after reading. But Erik had later on said in court that the letter held emotional value to him therefore he kept it.
THE LETTER READ:
"We alone know the truth, we alone know the secrets of our family (sick past). I do not look forward to broadcasting them around the country. I pray that it has to never happen. If it were not for you I doubt I would even try for manslaughter . I would rather try and escape or die.
I struggle with my belief that men take responsibility for their actions pleading a***e is not taking responsibility. "
Now Erik and Lyle menendez had both confessed to the murders the reason behind was unimaginable and horrid years of lifetime s****l, verbal and physical assault done by jose menendez to both the brothers. The brothers wanted to try for manslaughter that was it and according to leslie the only way out. So , the point that is left is according to the brothers they had endured a***e from a very young age but Lyle didn't even want to testify? How was this in their favour and Lyle not wanting to testify against his father made him look as if the a***e the had endured looked liek an excuse But the truth behind this is very different
According to a few interviews and court documents Lyle menendez had said that he felt like he was betraying his father by telling all of his doings in court and that he wanted people to see him as a great man even after learning about what he did because Lyle missed the small bond he had with his father and that he regretted killing him immediately after the crime. Honestly don't you think its understandable? I too would warn my younger sibling of letting all the family secrets out because once the media grasps it its out. You have no way out and you HAVE to listen to people with their opinions on YOUR family. you have to accept that the dirty secrets are broadcasted upon the world where people give unnecessary hate. So even though Lyle did not want to testify in the first trial he did for his younger brother because he felt a part of it owed him to the younger one who got involved in something so horrible.
ERIK'S WORDS ON THESE WERE:
"He felt that telling the sick secrets of the family would be like killing my parents again. And he did not want to do it."
IN THE LETTER THAT LYLE WROTE TO ERIK WHEN THEY WERE SERVING TIME IN PRISON ALSO SAID SOME LINES RELATED TO THIS TOPIC :
"I refuse to give up for dad's sake . He is watching and I will not disappoint him. We did not do anything for the money."
You want to take a hint to know what passed through his mind during the time he wrote the letter. while I'm no expert its CLEAR he felt like he owed it to the parents that ruined Lyle's life and even after their death he had so much respect for his parents KNOWING the parents took Lyle and Erik's childhood which they could never get back no matter how far they were willing to go for it, Because you can't really bring back a time can you?
But in the end Lyle did testify against his father in court during the first trial.
Because no matter what he felt soo much guilt on the fact that he could not protect his younger brother from the lifelong a***e he suffered alongside him. He felt like he owed erik more than what he owed to his parents because the parents in a sense did deserve what they got but Erik? He didn't have a choice he was abused because there was no way out. Erik was used as a tool all his life and Lyle was sick of watching his little brother live the life.
LYLE ONCE SAID:
"Do not think for a second that I favour someone over my brother."
