Episode Five: A Wolf in the Clearing
Lily’s POV
I didn’t know how long I had slept. The forest had wrapped me in a comforting quiet, and for the first time in ages, I had let myself rest without worry. But something stirred in the air—a sudden, heavy pressure that made the hairs on my arms stand on end. My eyes snapped open, and my heart leapt into my throat.
There, in the clearing, I froze.
A massive wolf stood before me, taller than any animal I had ever seen. His fur was black as midnight, thick and sleek, and his golden eyes glimmered like molten sunlight, piercing and intense. My first instinct should have been fear… but it wasn’t.
Instead, I felt a strange warmth, a wave of calm that washed over me. Relief. Happiness. Confusion. How could I look at a creature this immense, this powerful, and feel nothing but peace?
The wolf moved closer, each step deliberate, observing me. He studied me as though he had known me all his life. My cheeks flushed, and I scolded myself silently. Shy? At a wolf? Are you really shy at a wolf staring at you?
And yet, I couldn’t stop the small smile tugging at my lips. Something about his gaze… something in the golden depth of his eyes… made me feel seen, understood, and safe.
I wanted to tell him everything—my fears, my loneliness, my dreams of a life bigger than this—but I held back, unsure why I felt such a connection. For the first time ever, I felt happiness that didn’t come from a place of escape. It was strange, unfamiliar… and wonderful.
A flicker of white caught my eye. My little snow bird—the one who always signaled the time I needed to head back—fluttered down from the tree, perching gracefully on a branch. It gave me a knowing nod, and I realized with a start that it was almost evening. I sighed, standing and brushing leaves from my clothes.
I looked at the animals that had gathered around me, the deer, the foxes, the birds. “I’ll come back tomorrow,” I whispered, kneeling to pat them one by one. “And… you’d better bring me a bit more food next time,” I teased, laughing softly. They nodded as if they understood completely—they were my family, my little forest family.
Then my gaze fell on the black wolf again. Something unexplainable surged inside me. Without thinking, I rushed forward, pressing a soft kiss to the top of his massive head. His ears twitched, golden eyes studying me in that same calm, knowing way.
I giggled uncontrollably, spinning around as I darted back toward the edge of the forest, my heart pounding with exhilaration. My cheeks burned, and yet I couldn’t stop smiling. Something had changed. Something in the forest—and in the presence of that wolf—had made the impossible feel safe and wonderful.
And I couldn’t wait to come back tomorrow.
