Episode Two: Sanctuary Among the Trees Lily’s POV The moment Lily stepped past the last fence, the weight of the house—the insults, the chores, the cold stares—fell away. She breathed in the forest air, rich with pine and earth, and felt the tension in her shoulders finally loosen. She ran. Barely noticing the soft crunch of leaves under her shoes, she ran until the distant sound of her father’s voice calling after her faded into nothing. Here, in the forest, no one could reach her. No one could judge her. The forest had always been her sanctuary. Each tree was a silent friend; each winding path a familiar companion. The sunlight dappled the ground in patches, moving as the leaves whispered in the wind. Lily closed her eyes, letting the warmth wash over her. She smiled softly, the first genuine smile of the day. Her favorite place was the waterfall. A cascade of crystal water tumbled into a clear pool, the sound both powerful and soothing. She loved how the water seemed alive, constantly moving yet eternal. Sitting on the smooth rocks by the edge, she let her fingers trail in the cool, flowing stream. The water slipped between her fingers like a secret she could finally hold close. Birds sang their morning songs, and they seemed to recognize her presence. A bright bluebird landed on a nearby branch, tilting its head curiously as Lily hummed softly. A pair of sparrows hopped closer, chirping merrily. She laughed quietly when a squirrel scampered down with a small berry in its tiny paws, dropping it gently at her feet. Even the deer and foxes seemed to trust her. Sometimes, a timid doe would step out from the trees, and Lily would freeze, unsure whether to move—but the doe always stayed, nibbling on the grass while keeping a watchful eye on her. Other times, a fox would leave a small gift: a shiny stone, a ripe fruit, or a feather, as if the forest itself wanted to comfort her. Here, she was safe. Here, no one demanded perfection or mocked her beauty. The forest accepted her for who she was, a fragile human girl with a tired heart. Sitting on her favorite rock, she let her mind wander, thinking of nothing, or perhaps thinking of everything all at once. The sound of the waterfall became a rhythm in her chest. The birds, the rustling leaves, the gifts from the forest creatures—they reminded her she mattered somewhere, even if her stepmother and stepsisters couldn’t see it. She closed her eyes and let the water spray touch her face. In the gentle mist, she felt free. She felt alive. And for a few precious hours each day, she could forget the cruelty of the house she called home. Here in the forest, Lily was not an adopted child. She was not the target of insults or jealousy. She was simply Lily—the girl who belonged to the trees, the stream, and the waterfall. And maybe… just maybe… she would find a place to belong in the world beyond this forest too.
