The great hall of the Blood Moon compound was packed with wolves, their eyes tracking Lexi's every movement as Lucas led her inside. The air was thick with tension, with the scent of suspicion and barely restrained hostility. She could feel their stares like physical touches, assessing, judging, condemning.
"They know what I was," she murmured, her voice low enough that only Lucas could hear.
"They know what you are now," he corrected, his hand a steady pressure at the small of her back. "My mate. Their Luna."
But the growls that rippled through the crowd suggested not everyone was ready to accept that.
Elena stood near the front, her expression carefully neutral, but others weren't so diplomatic. A massive wolf with scars crisscrossing his face stepped forward, his lip curling. "You expect us to bow to a hunter? To the b***h who's killed our kind?"
The wolf inside Lexi surged to the surface, responding to the challenge with a violence that shocked her. Before she could think, before Lucas could intervene, she was moving. Her hand shot out and caught the wolf by the throat, slamming him back against the stone wall with a force that cracked the mortar.
"I was a hunter," she snarled, and her voice carried the resonance of something other, something wild. "I killed wolves who preyed on the innocent. Who slaughtered families. Who deserved to die." Her grip tightened, and the wolf's eyes widened as he struggled against her inhuman strength. "But I am not that anymore. I am your Luna. And if you ever speak to me like that again, I'll rip your f*****g throat out."
The silence that followed was absolute.
She could feel Lucas behind her, his presence a wall of power and approval. He wasn't stopping her. He was letting her prove herself, letting her establish her place in the hierarchy through the only language wolves truly understood: dominance.
The scarred wolf's resistance crumbled. His eyes dropped, his body going submissive in her grip. "Luna," he rasped, the title both acknowledgment and surrender.
Lexi released him and he slumped to the floor, gasping. She turned to face the rest of the pack, her heart pounding, the wolf inside her riding high on the victory. "Anyone else have something to say?"
No one moved. No one spoke.
Then, one by one, they lowered their eyes. Submitted.
Lucas's hand found hers, his fingers threading through hers in a gesture that was both possessive and proud. "Your Luna has spoken," he said, his voice carrying the weight of absolute authority. "And you will respect her as you respect me."
The pack's response was a chorus of acknowledgment, the tension breaking like a fever.
But as the crowd began to disperse, Lexi felt something else stirring inside her. A pressure building beneath her skin, in her bones, demanding release. The wolf wanted out. Wanted to run, to hunt, to claim this new existence fully.
Lucas must have sensed it through their bond because his grip on her hand tightened. "Not here," he murmured against her ear, his voice rough with understanding and something darker. "Come with me. I'll show you what you've become."
And as he led her out into the night, toward the forest that called to the wild thing she now carried inside her, Lexi realized with a mixture of terror and exhilaration that her transformation was only beginning.
