(21) Will I Be Safe?

Mike’s POV

I held her in my arms for a long time giving her a hug.  She would never know how brave I thought she was for taking this step.  For telling yet another person an important one at that about her ordeal.  I knew one thing for certain she needed to decompress a lot before we went to her house.  I know what she was wanting to do at home because I wanted the same thing.  I just wasn’t sure how it was going to go tonight and, in all honesty, I was scared to death of doing something wrong that would make it hard for us to ever be intimate again.  When she told me that she just wanted to go home I smiled at her and could hear the strain in her voice.  I smiled at her and said “we can go home here in a little bit but first let’s go get some dinner and you can tell me all about what happened and a few other things.”  She looked up at me with the brightest blue eyes and sank herself into my side.  As we were walking out the assistant say us and said something to effect of “be careful dude or the next thing you know you will be accused of rape as well.  I know her type and she will do it to you.”  I just shook my head and kept walking as if I didn’t even hear him.  This guy was seriously something else.  I couldn’t wait to see what Zack and his guys were going to dig up on him.  Just at that moment my phone rang and it was Zack.  “Thinking of the devil” I answered.  “Dude where are you?  I have some important news cand you talk?”  “I’m just leaving the district attorneys office with my woman as we speak.  What’s up?”  I heard Zack inhale and then he said “whatever you do don’t leave her alone for a good long time.”  “Zack now you have me worried what’s going on?”  Zack informed me that one of his guys was able to decipher that Sam was now out of jail and made some inquiries to take Lisa out so that she couldn’t testify to put him away.  “Apparently the D.A. isn’t just going for rape charges but she is going for attempted murder as well.  Which means…”  “Pretty boy goes away for a good long time.  Got it.  Do you have any extra guys available to run personal surveillance?”  Zack informed me that he in fact had a couple that would be more than happy to do the job.  Apparently, these guys knew all about Sam and hated watching him walk away without a scratch many times before.  While they never saw him do anything this horrendous it was only a matter of time before he did.  I told Zack where I was taking her to eat so he knew where to send his people.  I would spend every dime I had to make sure that this woman was protected.  I would call in every favor owed to me to see her have peace again.

When I hung up the phone Lisa was giving me a puzzled look and I just knew that I couldn’t keep this away from her.  I knew that this would more likely than not put a damper on tonight’s plans but I didn’t care we had forever if I had anything to say about it.  Right now, was about keeping her informed and making certain that she and the girls were safe.  She asked me what was going on and I told her I had some bad news about Sam and would rather tell her everything I knew once we got to the restaurant to eat.  She nodded her head and her eyes were tearing up already.  “It’s bad isn’t it, Mike?” she asked me.  I squeezed her hand and said “yes, it is baby, but don’t you worry I already have things in motion to keep you protected.”  When we pulled up to the restaurant, she looked at me and said “Mike we aren’t dressed well enough to go into this place.”  Then when she looked at me, she realized it “you own this place as well?”  I smiled back at her and said “yes I do and since I’m the owner I have my own private dining room so we won’t be bothered.”  Just as I was helping her out of the car two huge guys came walking up to us.  I felt Lisa stiffen in my arms and I looked at them and said “are you Zack’s guys?”  To that they both nodded and introduced themselves.  “I’m Cliff and this is here is my partner, Arnold.  We have been assigned by Zack to not leave Miss Lisa’s view at all times.  There will be two other guys that you won’t see who will be watching you through the night to make sure you are disturbed.  We will be on duty with you from seven in the morning until ten at night every day until this case is resolved.”  I nodded my head and Lisa asked “Mike why do I need bodyguards?”  I looked at her and asked her to come inside to sit down so that I could tell her everything.  To that she nodded her head and we walked into the restaurant.

Lisa’s POV

He was scaring me.  Ever since he got that phone call coming out of the district attorney’s office, he has been super cryptic and super watchful.  Just as we were walking into the restaurant my phone rang and I recognized the number as belonging to the D.A. herself.  I quickly answered it and she rushed in with “I’m so sorry I don’t know how this happened but Sam was released at some time while were talking.  Worse yet he wasn’t given any kind of monitoring device so we can’t even tell you where he is.  I need you to be careful and stay safe at all times do you understand?”  I looked up at Mike and then said into the phone “I think my boyfriend knew this before you told me because I now have two huge bodyguards that have told me they are with me until this is over.”  Cecilia sighed a huge sigh of relief and said “sounds like your man has everything handled.  But there is one thing you should know.”  There was a long pause and then she continued “he was caught on a recording asking for a hit man to take you out.”  With that the world started to go black and I heard three men groan at the same time “f**k!”  Before I knew it, I was being picked up in some very strong arms and could hear Mike talking on the phone.  I just closed my eyes as I was being carried somewhere I just didn’t know where.

When I opened my eyes again, I was laying on a small couch with a wash cloth on my head.  I burst into tears and immediately was engulfed into Mike’s arms.  He was cooing at me to calm down that everything would be ok.  I looked up at him and told him that he needed to tell me everything he knew or even suspected because I was getting scared.  He let out a long sigh and told me that he would.  “You see the other day when I came home and you were asleep on the couch you had started to talk in your sleep and I heard you having a conversation with someone.  Then I heard you cry that you weren’t making it up and that you would never falsely accuse someone of something that bad.”  Oh, crap was I dreaming about that conversation?  “So, I made a phone call to Cecilia and told her exactly what happened and all about how you don’t need to be stressed out or it could kill you.  She agreed and also agreed that her assistant couldn’t handle your case as he wasn’t sensitive enough.”  I looked at him and said “go on.”  He took in a large breath and said “when we got to the office today, he muttered something under his breath I’m not sure that you caught it but I did.  It made me suspicious.  When I saw that you were relaxed talking to Cecilia without me, I excused myself and made a few phone calls asking my friend to check out both Sam and our little assistant friend.”  I wasn’t liking where this was going but I needed to hear it.  My skin was starting to crawl and fear sunk in.  I couldn’t have the girls home not until this bastard was caught. 

“Tell me all of it I know there is something more.”  I said to Mike as he took a long pause.  He looked over at my two new best friends and sighed.  “When I went to the bathroom, I heard someone walk in talking on a phone so I lifted up my legs so that I wouldn’t be seen.”  “Why would you do that?  People talk on phones in the bathroom all the time.”  He looked at me and said “I recognized the voice and knew he was about to have a conversation that I or anyone was meant to hear.  I heard him telling someone he was working on getting that person out and discrediting you as a witness.  He was hoping to get you to another conference room before his boss came out so it looked like you just left.”  I inhaled sharply and couldn’t imagine why someone would want to do something like this.  “As we were leaving Cecilia’s office, I got a call from my buddy Zack with intel on Sam that he had been released and had been making inquiries as to how to get rid of you.  That’s when I asked Zack for a few of his best men to protect you until this asshole is caught.  These two have known Sam over the years and are tired of watching him get away with things that hurt others.  While to their knowledge he has never done anything like this he’s still done his fair share of evil.  They have vowed to protect you as long as it takes.”  With tears in my eyes, I nodded my head slowly and told the guys thank you for doing this to me.  I asked them what their fee was and started to pull out my checkbook to pay them.  Mike grabbed my hand and said “honey don’t worry about that I have the payment all covered.  When this is done and over with, they all get a month’s worth of meals at any of my establishments.”  I looked at Mike and asked the million-dollar question “Will I ever be safe from him?”  Mike hugged me close and said “as long as I have a dollar to my name and breath in my body you sure as hell will.”

Zack’s POV

After talking with Mike, I got right on finding out information about this guy that had hurt his new love.  Mike was a great guy and deserved someone special and it sounded like he found it.  As I was doing some digging, I found that somehow the guy had been released without monitors or anything.  Furthermore, I found out that he had been making inquiries as to having someone seriously hurt or kill Lisa.  I decided I would send two of my best guys to guard this woman during the day and two others to guard at night.  When I called in Cliff and Arnold, I explained the situation to them.  They were all on board when I showed them a picture of the attacker, they both were more than on board.  “Boss if he shows his ugly face around her can we pummel him?  We have both been dying to get our hands on him.”  I gave them a puzzled look and the went on to explain that they had went to school with this character and yes, he had won a half a million dollars in the lottery recently but he didn’t need it.  His family was rich and were always bailing him out of trouble.  While they had never heard of him doing anything as horrid as he did to Lisa he had done more than enough and it shouldn’t have surprised anyone that he escalated his violence.  I immediately called Mike to inform him of what I found out and that I was sending out two of my best guys for daytime security for his girl.  He informed me they were going to his top end establishment where he had a private dining room so that they wouldn’t be as exposed to the outside world because he didn’t want her in her house when he told her the news.  I had Cliff and Arnold meet him there.

About an hour later I received a call from Arnold and found out that she didn’t take the news well about her attacker being let out of jail.  Who would?  While she had been passed out a few of my guys had gotten an opportunity to check out her house to see the security or should I say lack of that she had.  When I informed Arnold, he shared the information with Mike who promptly got on the phone.  “I’m going to try and convince her to come to my house to stay.  You know I have state of the art security along with a security force.  I would still want Cliff and Arnold to be her personal guards for the daytime but we wouldn’t need your other guys at night.  Also, at my place she could bring her girls over if she wanted to be around them and not worry about someone hurting them.  I will let you know when she wakes up and I get the chance to talk to her about it.”  I agreed that his house would be better off for her even if she didn’t have little’s to worry about.  This man was snake and it was about time he paid for his crimes.  I needed to do more digging into how he got released especially when there was an attempted murder charge along with the rape charge and the D.A. had specifically asked for no bail and it was granted.  He was supposed to stay until trial.

Mike’s POV

When she looked up at me with tears in her eyes asking if she would ever be safe again, I couldn’t help the pain that shot through my heart.  This woman was so special and I vowed I would do anything to help her out.  Yes, this Sam came from money but it turned out I had more.  We would get him and he would pay.  “Lisa honey have you thought about staying somewhere else?  Somewhere more protected than your house where you could take the girls and be able to be with them?”  I asked her.  She looked up at me and shook her head no.  “I don’t know of anywhere else that would be safe for any of us.  The only thing I know for sure is that I think he knows my address so for the time the girls are better off without seeing me.  They are safe at Ray’s.  I was looking forward to seeing them and holding them again but I can’t now that I would be putting them in danger.”  I smiled at her and said “I know this is sudden but how about after dinner we go to your place and pack up some things for you and the girls for a while to stay at my house.  If you forget anything we can always either swing back by your place or one of my guys can go get it.  He doesn’t know where I live and my house is protected better than Fort Knox.”  With those last words I could see Cliff and Arnold chuckling and nodding their head.  Cliff spoke up and said “we would still be there during the day to be your personal guards but he’s right his house is probably one of the most secure places in the states.  You and your girls would be totally safe.”  “That sounds like a great idea but I don’t know if Ray would go for it.”  I looked at her and assured her that I would be able to handle Ray and convince him of it no problem.  With that I made a call to Zack and informed him that after dinner we were going to get some stuff from her house and would be bunkering down at my place for the duration.  She seemed to relax at knowing she would be safe but yet she was uncertain about what she was walking into I could tell.  Wait until she sees my place.
