##CHAPTER FIVE## Cold night air smacked her face instantly but She didn’t stop cause she knew this might be her only chance of escaping. “ELENA.” Damien’s deep voice echoed behind her. OH GOD HE WAS FOLLOWING HER. She clutched her purse dramatically and ran faster down the sidewalk. “WHY ARE YOU RUNNING IN HEELS?!” Bianca screamed through the phone she had somehow answered again mid-escape. “I DON’T KNOW!” Elena wheezed. “PRAY FOR ME!” Cars honked loudly as she nearly collided with a businessman holding coffee. “Sorry!” “I’m being hunted emotionally!” “ELENA.” Damien’s voice sounded much closer now. Why was this man so calm while chasing her?! Was he even human?! Muttering as she risked one glance backward. BIG mistake. Damien Cross was walking toward her with terrifying composure, hands in his pockets, dark suit untouched by chaos, looking like a billionaire assassin sent specifically to collect her nonsense. Meanwhile she looked like a panicked raccoon in a satin dress fighting for survival “Stop running,” Damien called calmly. “NO!” “You’re causing a scene.” “I AM the scene!” Several pedestrians turned to stare openly now. One girl whispered: “Oh my God, is this a breakup?” “Yes!” Elena shouted while still running. “A traumatic one!” Damien exhaled slowly like a man questioning every life decision that led him here tonight. “Elena.” She pointed dramatically at him while backing away. “You know I don’t LIKE you but you instigated my family for this blind date, please just leave me alone I have someone I’m in love with. “And please just call off this blind date I don’t want to marry you we’re not meant for each other please” Elena said as she looked pitiful with fake tears pouring out from her eyes.!” Damien finally stopped walking. Not because he was tired no he was surprised and looked genuinely stunned. This is probably the first time someone has rejected him. Which honestly gave Elena confidence for exactly three seconds until her heel suddenly caught in a sidewalk crack. “OH GOD NO.” Everything happened slowly after that. Her ankle twisted and her purse flew upward with her lipstick launched into the traffic where the people was busy watching every scene unfold. And Elena herself stumbled directly backward— straight into Damien’s arms. Of course. Of COURSE. Strong hands caught her instantly before she hit the ground. The world tilted briefly as Damien steadied her against his chest. Elena froze. Damien looked down at her silently. One dark eyebrow lifted slowly. Pedestrians openly stared now like they were watching a live romantic comedy. A woman nearby whispered: “This is better than those TV DRAMAS we subscribe to watch. Elena wanted death immediately. She attempted dignity and Failed terribly and now her only escape route has been cut off. “Release me,” she whispered dramatically. “No.” “Please.” “You ran across Manhattan because I booked a hotel.” “You booked it TOO FAST!” Something dangerous flickered briefly through Damien’s gray eyes. Then— unexpectedly he laughed. Actually laughed. Low deep and real The sound shocked Elena so much she forgot to breathe. Because this terrifying billionaire barely smiled. Yet now he stood under glowing city lights laughing quietly while holding her against him like she was the most ridiculous creature alive. “You’re insane,” he murmured. Elena narrowed her eyes. “And you agreed to the hotel immediately like some emotionally unavailable psychopath.” “That hurt my feelings a little.” “You don’t have feelings.” “I do now.” The words came out softly. Accidentally sincere. And suddenly the air between them changed again but she knew too well that If she stayed any longer something might happen.
